I think a lot of this was pretending to be ~deep but ended up as 20k of everyone is gay

This is a perfect summation of peak electrumqueen.

Ebelre wasn't gay in this one! Think how much angst would have been prevented if only everyone had been happily gay. (Cuz as everyone knows all gay men are compatible)

Yeah, I liked it but kind of went... "Why?" when she mentioned that McDavid had a boyfriend. I don't know why but that's what took me out of the fic for a few minutes.

Plus it kind of annoyed me a little that while Pavel Zacha is mentioned by name about 10 times, he never shows up, and neither do most of the Devils. This felt like Devils fic where she didn't really have to write about the Devils - and I say this while understanding that Hall's POV made this a little difficult because of how he cuts himself off from them.

Maybe this could have benefited from a Henrique POV, so it could be made clear why he's in love with Hall (or, as I interpreted it, why he fell back in love with the supremely messed-up version of Hall). It could have been interesting to see their teammates' views on everything, because I kind of don't buy that they would let Hall self-destruct the way he does, even if they don't really know him.

I wasn't surprised that she gave McDavid a boyfriend, because I know she's super attached to McDavid/Ekblad, but then Dylan and Mitch were dating and then broken up and then back together, and Bennett and Smith-Pelly were flirting with each other, and Bennett had shirtless pics of Bortz on his phone and it was all just Too Much.

It might have bothered me less if she had made someone who isn't all that popular in fandom gay, but. McDavid, Strome, and Marner? And then Beau Bennett! Give me a break.

I'm actually on board for fic where he's the Token Straight. I think it actually would have worked in this fic if she wasn't so obsessed with her preset ships. Part of the disconnect between Taylor and Connor could have been that Connor wants to talk about girl problems and Taylor can't relate! Or something!

She puts McDavid/Ekblad in fic a lot, and it all feels very unearned in the writing

I think with that ship she tries to pull the same thing she did with Hall/Henrique in this fic, where they're sooooo in looooove and it's an epic romance for the ages but there's never any explanation of why they even like each other in the first place, we're just supposed to accept it as is because she said so.

this is my problem with the mcdavid/ekblad she writes. then again, i also feel like mcdavid/ekblad is criminally boring, and there are way more interesting people and dynamics to write for both of them.

though maybe a different writer could get me to like mcdavid/ekblad, i don't know.

I classify McDavid/Ekblad with McDavid/Strome as sort of the same kind of ship written by the same sort of people who are way more interested in the GTA crowd and junior hockey than I can ever stomach. I think with Ekblad the ship has a bit more potential but it remains very unrealized.

i like mcdavid/strome, but i see your point. strome is willing to cry on camera, which helps for me.

with ekblad, part of me is like, why would you write ekblad/mcdavid when you can write ekblad with one of his more interesting teammates? trocheck, for example, given that hilarious interview they did together.

Same here. I'm sure there are ways it could be interesting (there was a McDavid/Strome I remember liking a while back) but so far it isn't been and the relationships aren't built well by the authors writing them.

This was my main problem, too. I actually like her writing style quite a bit, and I thought Hall's emotional arc was well done and kept me reading, but for Devils fic to literally not mention anyone other than Adam Henrique who was on the team before 2015 is... frustrating. Andy Greene and Patrik Elias and Cory Schneider and Travis Zajac and the rest of the team are just off somewhere being straight and functional, I guess.

Also, though the notes mention someone giving her Jersey details, her subsequent claim that she didn't listen is truth in advertising. Why do they keep going down the shore in the autumn?? No one is there! And it's an hour+ drive away from where they are! How does someone fall off the boardwalk into the ocean? THERE IS A BEACH IN THE WAY. And that's not even getting into the characterization of various north Jersey cities that made no sense. Hoboken in 2016 is a genuinely hip place full of young people where most of the younger Devils live, not a slum.

I actually live in Central Jersey right now and was a little weirded out by her Jersey. Look, if you want to put a slum-esque area in your fic set in Jersey, you can use Camden, where one of my friends got stabbed a few years back. I have trouble buying the idea that any rich athlete would even be in a shitty part of Jersey, though, because there are genuinely nice places here, dammit.

Maybe Zajac, Schneider, Greene, and Elias are all just riiiight in the background of every scene, like easter eggs!

No, but the people you mentioned all seem decent enough to not just be like "oh, Hall is scoring, it's okay if he continues to destructively spiral down into depression and alcohol". I have trouble believing that none of them would try and talk to him - Schneider was traded from a Canadian team for too little! They have things in common!

Camden would probably also be a little too far away, considering the drive (though it's available for Flyers writers, if they want it!), but there are more appropriate North Jersey cities to malign than Hoboken. Just set it in the non-touristy parts of Newark.

And yeah, Andy Greene in particular feels so "team dad" that I'd like to hope he'd step in before Hall got that bad. Or, more importantly, before the poor ROOKIE got that bad.

Lol, I said Camden because I figured if she's having them drive an hour plus to the shore, she'd be fine with them going to Camden too. If I was going to make an actual, legit suggestion, I'd say Jersey City could be an option along with certain parts of Newark.

Oh, god, the rookie bits felt so unbelievable to me. Are you telling me all these people are aware that Taylor Hall is in a self-destructive spiral and that he's dragged a rookie into it and they do nothing???

I mean, with the "Everyone's Gay!" tone of the fic, maybe Greene is like, making out with Zajac in the corner and having gay angst or something. (Disclaimer: I would read this fic.)

I found it even more implausible that the team would allow Hall to drag a rookie with him on that spiral. Like even Henrique in the fic is just like "you have to stop!" and then doesn't do anything. Where are the authority figures???

YOU CAN'T FALL OFF THE BOARDWALK INTO THE OCEAN, maybe you can fall off the boardwalk into a skeezy tattoo parlor.

I mean, that seems way more likely. Or into a weird t-shirt shop. Or onto a seagull attempting to eat a pizza crust.

Aw, I miss the shore.
