(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)The only thing that really annoyed me was Chance basically spilling everything to Hannah and asking her for relationship advice. At that point they'd met all of twice. I wasn't sure why he called her instead of one of his friends who he had known longer. (Though my response may be disproportionate - it always bugs me in fic when characters act too close to each other given their actual level of acquaintance.)
Other than that, which is a really minor point, it was good. It was so nice to see two characters actually communicate their problems instead of dancing around them for the whole fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)If the money is truly theirs (which it should be since they are married), they need to have some kind of joint financial interests, at least a shared checking account they both put money into or something and joint discussions of how it's spent. But Chance was worse than Leon for treating the money like Leon's, especially when he got to the part about at least it wasn't a house or a car after Leon buys their wedding rings. Does that mean they can never have a house, because Chance would see it as Leon gifting it to him? It drove me nuts.
So, I didn't like that part of the story at all, but I did like the overall relationship, the writing quality and the "tone" of the piece. I also liked the linked primer for giving me enough background to understand the story. I did do some googling of Braid, but all I could find out was that he was once a dev camp invitee of the Caps, and possibly also a training camp invitee who made it into a pre-season game a couple of years ago.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)I didn't feel the story was truly resolved, mostly because I think it's pretty clear that the financial aspect is just the most obvious and contentious part of Chance's issues.
I agree. I was pretty neutral on the Hannah aspect, because I wasn't sure what she was doing in the story. Is she just the female advice-giving OC? Well, lots of fics, have that, I don't know why, but I'm used to it enough to overlook it. But the fic also hinted a couple of times that she represents the straight relationship Chance wishes he could have, which is uh, a more serious problem that probably should have been either dealt with or excised from the fic altogether, but not just skimmed by like it was no big deal.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)I also think that a lot of Chance's angsting was basically over the fact that he didn't want to be the 'woman' in a income-lopsided relationship. Like, he didn't want to sit in the box with WAGs (which, whatever, I imagine a lot of family members get cycled through that, since it'd be different from a family room), etc. I feel like that part didn't get examined at all, and that there wasn't much difference between the characters being young and naive and the narrative being young and naive.
That said, being married absolutely doesn't mean pooling assets or having a joint bank account or even owning property or filing taxes together. It can mean all those things, but doesn't necessarily have to - what it probably needs is the communication about those things, which this fic didn't do a good job of showing.
