I've seen people on tumblr claim it's inappropriate for someone over the age of 18 to interact with someone under the age of 18. Like, ever. I don't understand.

Yeah, it's wacky. Especially as there are a lot of mentorship programs that are all about giving kids older people to connect with if they don't have their own role models. Interacting with adults is good for kids, and helps them transition into adult society.

There's certainly things to be said about how adults shouldn't treat kids as contemporaries, ranging from sexualised stuff to leaning on them emotionally, but as usual the Internet takes this reasonable point of view and extends it to LITERALLY NEVER TALK TO A MINOR OR YOU ARE A PAEDOPHILE.

And also, like, there are situations where a 19 year old and a 17 year old basically ARE contemporaries (last year of high school/first year of college, some work situations, and yes the CHL) and treating them like one is An Adult and the other is A CHILD!!! who needs PROTECTION from the scary adult!!! is just, what?

That was my boyfriend and I. We started dating when he was a senior and I was a junior. He's only a year older but for four months, he was 2 years older because his birthday was before mine. We had this problem for two years until I turned 18. If anyone told me I needed to be protected, I would have laughed. And I would still laugh and disagree if someone told me it was wrong.

Oh man this when I was a sophomore there was a girl in my class who was dating a senior. She ran away from home for some teenaged reason and was with him. And since he was 18 and she wasn't 16 (age of consent in my state) her parents said he KIDNAPPED her.

All the drama ended up getting resolved but holy shit it was crazy for a while.

FWIW, the posts I've seen have been A) more directed at, like, 14 and 40 year olds and B) about ~young people curating safe spaces~ and the appropriateness of forming peer-to-peer relationships that didn't really apply to student/teacher relationships. Or at least not in shitty, poor, high tension schooling. The posts still tend to be pretty OTT, though.

Yeah, most people take sensible opinions but I have very definitely seen posts that specify ALL non-familial interaction is verboten. A bunch of people had reblogged it making fun, and someone had then reblogged it saying DON'T YOU REALISE YOU'RE DEFENDING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS.

Extremists are usually the ones being made fun of.

It's all especially ironic given that the vast majority of actual abuse of minors comes from their family, not from random people outside it.
