That is actually the one and only time I've ever liked him. Hockey isn't like being in battle, and I appreciate someone recognizing that sports =/= waging war.

There was also him hanging out with that kid, if you want conflicted Torts feelings.

Just personally, I don't think hanging out with a kid is going to give me conflicted feelings about a guy using his authority to diminish black athletes taking a stand against racism.

It's fucking Tortorella. He barely has a job, let alone authority in the media.

He's the coach of an NHL team and of the US national team at the WCOH, and obviously speaking to the media in that capacity. But ok.

He's also widely considered a joke and Team USA's goal is not getting laughed off the ice in Toronto. Seth Jones is not crying himself to sleep over this one.

Keep telling yourself that.

DA

Hockey Twitter opinions != the NHL, or the public, wow.

idk what point you're trying to make here.

da

That five people on twitter thinking Torts is a joke doesn't mean his words don't have influence and impact in the hockey community.

And even if everyone did universally agree that he's a joke... that has nothing to do with the fact that it's awful for him to speak as head coach representing team USA and use that platform to say things like this?

Fan and media opinion of Tortorella and team USA has nothing to do with the experience of a black man working under someone with a lot of power over his career, who Jones maybe has respect for, who is happy to diminish black lives and rights? Whatever Jones thinks, I have no clue, but it's not a good thing, and Torts being a joke or cute with a kid doesn't make it or him any less bad.

Uh, he's definitely an established public figure in the hockey world. Maybe not the most respected one, generally, but this is probably a redeeming move in some people's eyes.

Exactly. Hanging with kids doesn't really do anything to change my opinion of a person. If I already like the person, then them+kids is adorable, if I don't then I don't care what age people they choose to spend their free time with.

I just meant that it's a cute video and he comes off as genuinely nice in it. It's the first thing that comes to mind for me when people talk about reasons that don't hate him, because it's come up in discussions of him on reddit and the like. I did not intend it as a counterpoint to what he's saying about the anthem.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly kind of sad he's all up in this anthem thing now. Because his point yesterday(?) about changing the way he talks because sports isn't a war, was really salient and well thought out. And now is basically lost because he can't keep his mouth shut.

Yeah, it's unfortunately that, whatever point he intended to make, his position on the anthem protest makes it come across in retrospect more as military worship than about addressing an unhealthy attitude towards sports.

Beyond his inability to keep his mouth shut my only other opinion is I wish he wasn't CBJ's head coach because there are a lot of young players on that team I'd rather he not ruin.
