I think that is the key, to make sure that by filtering stuff out/unfollowing some people you're not missing everything. It's a bit of a balancing act to find the right people who provide levity but will still talk about important topics. But of course that is a personal thing of the person opting in on following someone rather than the responsibility of the one posting content.

But I read the original post the opposite way as you. They're not trying to stick their head in the sand (which is why they pointed out certain topics) but they feel overwhelmed. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Eh, I think you're giving too much credit. They minimized the topics people have been complaining about by saying, duh, don't you know anything about real life where this happens all the time? -- when, yeah, no shit, and we hate it in real life, too? The difference is meme/fandom knows nothing and has nothing to say about someone' racist friend of a friend, but hockey fandom has all heard of Tortorella and have an interest in things that happen in the hockey world. "Oh he's just a little racist but everyone is" sounds a little too much either like a lack of empathy or a "don't bring real life issues into my sports!!" Like, I get that some fans who hate Torts are obviously enjoying getting to have unassailable SJ ammunition against him (which, ew), but for me, what he said and the fall out made me feel really, really terrible, like I'm not sure if I want to watch hockey anymore. So if this anon is feeling overwhelmed, you'd think they'd show more empathy for people who are overwhelmed by the existence of these issues, too.

Which, obviously how I feel and how other fans feel about particular issues isn't anyone else's problem or responsibility and you're allowed to be tired of the subject and to exercise self-care. But it's possible (and not very hard actually) to do that without being dismissive.
