A "lemon" fic is an old-school fandom term for something porny/NC-17. I honestly have no idea as to the origin. I know there used to be some distinction between lemons and limes, but by the time I got to fandom circa 2002 that was falling out of favor and I never figured out the difference.

Lemon chicken fic is a particular trope where everyone else in the story is really mean to the central character, but then (usually) realize their behavior was wrong/based on a misunderstanding, and comforting apology follows. I think the origin is SGA fandom - someone who was there might be able to answer this more specifically.

I was never in the fandom, but apparently in SGA there was a famous fic where everyone is mean to Rodney after he screws up in canon. This includes lemon chicken being served in the cafeteria when everyone knows Rodney is allergic to lemon, presumably done deliberately to spite him. So it's that level of OTT meanness/woobification.

I think a lot of Bennguin fic that starts out with Seguin on the Bruins dips into that tropiness a little, but I could use some more with a larger variety of villain.

Someone actually compiled a list, rated by degree of lemon-chicken-ness, of all the fics that involved Rodney being forced to be penitent, with varying degrees of hurt/comfort after he'd been punished enough. (My fav was the one where he died saving Atlantis and the whole expedition realized how much he'd done for them and wept at his deathbed, all tearfully wishing they'd been nicer to him in life. But it was too late! Poor, poor Rodney.)

Oh, SGA fandom, the gift that keeps on giving.

Given that the bad thing Rodney did was destroy a solar system, the phenomenon is really interesting. I think it says a lot about how people relate to their faves and handle criticism of them that's still really prominent in fandom today.

Here's a quick rundown on it: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Post-Trinity_Phenomenon

Counterpoint: McKay and Sheppard would have died too if not for the deus ex machina.

AYRT

I just went to look for that link to post and got side-tracked :D. Good times.

(It was only 4/5ths of a solar system! And it was uninhabited!)

It was 5/6ths, wasn't it? /missing the point

Maybe? It's been a long time. The point is, he didn't destroy the WHOLE solar system! Just most of it.

Huh. Thank you. You'd think I'd have figured out lemons.

The SGA thing, I had no chance. :)

The lemon term originated in manga/anime fandoms and I've been told by people in that side of things that it actually originated among native Japanese-speaking fandom before migrating to non-native speaking manga/anime fandom and eventually the rest of fandom.

Google seems to back that. Looks like there was a soft-core thing in the 70s called "Cream Lemon" that resulted in "lemon" becoming actualfax Japanese-language slang, which was adopted by people in fandom as a handy descriptor/rating.
