A question for the ages, but does anyone have any tips for staying focused during writing? I have it all plotted out and everything, I just can't *clenches fist* write.

And, while we're at it, what constitutes a good ending in meme's opinion? I haven't had the issues with this fandom's endings that some people on meme do, so I think I'm just not very sensitive to them. Which in turn makes me think I might not have the best judgment about ending it too soon vs. dragging it out.

For your first question, I find it really helpful to find a partner to do writing sprints with. I got into the habit during Yuletide one year because the yulechat IRC has sprints regularly, and now I ask chat buddies or put a call out on Twitter when I need to get some words out.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Writing sprints with a buddy can help!

And I don't think there's a hard and fast rule for a good ending, but your fic won't feel complete unless the protagonist has completed an arc of some sort.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-17 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
In regards to your second question...I find that sometimes it feels like a fic ends halfway through a scene, or with an obvious question/plot point left unresolved. So as long as your ending doesn't do either of those things, you should be good!

I find that I tend to get distracted while writing on the computer, so I always write my first drafts/outlines/ideas on paper, then transfer it to the computer to re-organize and edit.

OP

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Good news: Finally got the ball rolling!

Bad news: This is shaping up be the first longfic I've written in years *flails uselessly*

what does it mean to be too "self-indulgent" with your writing? i used to think it meant the same thing as "id fic" but now i'm not sure :(

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
To me, it means sacrificing readability for ones own enjoyment; being overly verbose or minimalistic for no apparent reason, skipping over or wallowing in plot points in ways that ultimately hurt the plot, leaving a character unchecked because they're the author's pet, stuff like that. For me, the difference between self-indulgent fic and tropey/iddy fic is more or less mindfulness of the audience.

It means you fall in love with your words so much, you won't cut extraneous scenes or characters, even if they don't help the story.

I've been attempting to write a gen fic. It is a disaster. I should have seen this coming (platonic cuddling? Really, self?).

Re: Writing Thread

There used to be a whole genre of Sentinel fic like that.

I was angsting about never writing anything anymore, woe is me, and then went to look through my bookmarks for prompts from tsb and here, and, wonders of wonders, I actually got inspired enough to start something. so thank you, nonnies, for your fun discussions a while ago!

(it was also fun to see that 3 of my prompt bookmarks have had fic just like it posted to ao3 since I've saved them, bless. <3)

Re: Writing Thread

I don't think I've ever appreciated authors who write the first fic for a ship or character enough. This is a lot harder than I thought. /o\

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Fistbump of solidarity from someone who's been there, nonny. But on the bright side, it's kind of awesome if your fic does manage to stir up some interest in the pairing!

I'm thinking about writing a continuation-ish version of the Larkin/Werenski dream-walking story from the other (Zach's) perspective.

Has anyone ever done something this?? Did you write it and then ask or ask and then write it?? I'm super nervous about asking the author if they mind and I keep backtracking and thinking maybe I'll just write it and keep it to myself (rejection, it scares me.)

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The author's Strome/Tavares fic had a couple of sequels/spin-offs, if that helps any. I don't know if or how they went about asking the author about it, or how the author felt about them, but I guess they establish a precedent?

The cyclical nature of fandom is so interesting to me. I wrote an Olympic pairing story in 2012 and like clockwork on Friday the opening ceremonies happened and suddenly I'm getting kudos on a story that's had probably 20 hits in the last 3 years.

Would anyone be willing to look over a rarepairs fic for me. It's 4k Rangers pairing. At this point I am looking for a second pair of eyes to comment on the structure, flow and check it is working. I will need a SPaG review later though.

*opens word doc*

... how the hell do people put words together good? Where was I going with this? What year is it?

I already scrapped two of my drafts for the rarepair exchange, suddenly putting words together seems impossible.

Let's hope idea number 3 has some staying power... :/

Re: Writing Thread

So there's a fic I want to write. Except that I feel like the plot kind of hinges on the main character having an actual relationship instead of some sort of gen thing -- but there's no basis for a ship with anyone at all. So I either have to hope and wait social media or something provides something shippy, or pull a completely random pair out of nowhere. Meh.

Re: Writing Thread

Why did I convince myself writing mpreg was a good idea, I've been agonizing over what name to give the fictional baby for literally almost a week and gotten no writing done in the meantime
