BNFs don't often attract devoted hordes on the quality of their prose alone though. Certainly I don't think anyone in hockey has. The most recent example of it that I can think of is leupagus getting thousands of people to read Poe Dameron/Luke Skywalker based on exactly 0 interaction between them in the film.

da

I don't need BNF levels of notoriety. Just, like, a solid base and a few people to go "nah" when haters get hypercritical. Not that I really have haters in the first place.

I don't even know who I'd say is a BNF anymore.

Same. K/T BNFs have left. S/G BNFs have also left but for Other Reasons. And the one that still writes them is getting a lot more shade over here than she ever used to, based on social justice type concerns.

There are definitely some prolific, hood writers, but none of them have the personal fandom presence I associate with BNFs.

I don't quite know what you mean by personal fandom presence. thehoyden is a multifandom BNF but she's never been known for having an engaging social media presence. When I think of that kind of BNF, I think of gyzym.

I associate BNFs generally with multiple tropey longfics that may be good or may be only competent and stock standard otherwise. But either way they will get read because people like longfic.

SA Rethinking my comment a little bit. Engaging should be replaced with another word. Notorious maybe? I'm just thinking that svmadelyn was never what I'd call engaging but you can't deny she was a BNF with some kind of personal fandom presence.

Ayrt

Notorious falls more in line with what I was thinking too. Also doing things like organizing exchanges or fandom events.

I think you either have to give the people what they want (and there are different ways to do that), or you have to be really, really fucking good. And I don't do the one because wrong ships and genres and wrong takes on otherwise popular genres, and my prose disappears. I think most BNFs get there by giving the people what they want though.

sa

Also, I should clarify that I wasn't necessarily thinking of BNFs with my original comment. Just "more than a handful of people like your stuff."

I think there's a third option of being very prolific. If you are regularly producing content, even if it's mediocre or not the popular pairings, people will come to appreciate its reliability.

I think that's one of the ways to give people what they want.

Unless you write nothing but "platonic" D/s, in which case I think you're SOL.

Actually that's a lie; I think there's all sorts of things you can write prolifically without appealing to people, especially if your fandom doesn't share your interests.
