It's the reality you live in, but I'm not surprised if you can't wrap your head around it. It also applies to pretty much every other ~cool slang phrase~ white fandom picks up and inevitably misuses.

Right, and it's not just the appropriation of the ~cool slang that bugs me, it's also ~cool white people making fun of the ~~boring mayo white people, which... lmao, ok.

Dude, not that I like the ayrt's attitude but mayonnaise as an insult for white people has been around since at least the 1970s and it probably hit SNL before you were even born. The ship has sailed on white people not using it.

The "ship has sailed" on a lot of things but we... can... still... dislike... them??? (Like, the ship has sailed on white people wearing dreadlocks and bindis and warbonnets, ad infinitum, ad nauseam)

Groups self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them is not at all the same as cultural appropriation.

da

I mean, it's not "cultural appropriation" in the sense that the insult "mayo" is a culturally valuable thing, but black Americans have been talking about white people (and let's be real also non-black POC, of which I am one) using language that originates from and has a specific meaning in their communities -- in ways that misconstrue it, depoliticize it, erase Blackness from it, are just flat out unfair (because it's stigmatized when black people use it and ~hip when others do) -- for a long, long time. Also white people who make fun of whiteness but exclude themselves from that mockery are at best laughably un-self-aware.

Lmao @ "groups self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them" like making fun of white people is the same as pejoratives aimed at other racial groups. They aren't self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them because that would actually require self-awareness. They're hopping on the train because they think it's ~funny and that they're ~cool, non-mayo white people when they're just as mayo as any other clueless white person.

Someone else made a good point about white people not being in a position to ~reclaim insults used against them, but "self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them" would be white people calling themselves "mayo," not Flyers fans calling Crosby "mayo."
