Re: Hockey Media

This is hockey media... adjacent? Anyway, Elliot Friedman, CBC hockey guy, got tapped two weeks ago to be an announcer for the Olympics. He got Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps mixed up and called the wrong winner, and then was so upset he made a mistake the next race, too.

And man, he feels really, really bad about it, you guys.

I grant you some of the drama is thanks to the author who wrote the article - all those one-line paragraphs! - but even so, omg so dramatic.

I think the author is using good technique to adequately make the audience feel like they are feeling what Friedman is feeling.

Somehow, he got the end of the race right. It’s good that he did, because he says, “If I didn’t say that [spoiler], I would have been on a flight this morning and I would have gone home. I would have quit. There’s no question in my mind.”

Oh, Friedge. You're right. He's being very dra-ma-tic.

aw, i felt so bad for him though. it was news even in my continental european country, in a "ha ha, look at what this dumb announcer did" way.

but yeah, that's a very dramatic article.

I feel pretty bad for him - he's not a play-by-play guy even in hockey, he doesn't cover swimming, and he was invited to the games to fill in for Steve Armitage, who normally calls the Olympics but who was sidelined with heart trouble. Sucks to be in that sort of situation and then make such a big mistake.

This remind me that Phelps/Lochte was big in swimming rpf.

Maybe he had been reading a bodyswap fic and got confused?

I went in a little Phlochte kick when Phelps came out of retirement, and I remember there being one writer who was maybe not the best technical writer, but they had a really impressive way of, like, establishing a competitive swimming atmosphere that no one in hockey fandom has come close to with hockey.

Introduce her to hockey fandom asap please.

She actually was in the hockey fandom

Turningterrific was, the author I was talking about, lillyluna, is not. Lillyluna is more... not quite icehot-esque, but I avoided reading her's for awhile because I immediately filed it under badfic. When I ran out of anything else, I ended up kinda shocked how well she dragged me in on the swimming front. Turningterrific's probably the better writer overall, but also more... I'm struggling to find the words. More generic? Comfortable? It's been a year or two and lillyluna's depiction was still the one that stuck out in my mind.

da

huh, really? i've never given lillyluna a go because of the badfic vibes. maybe i'll do that next.

ayrt

I mean. I hesitate to say it's definitely not badfic. It's like a surprisingly satisfying read that you buy for like two bucks after your flight gets delayed.

At least it was an amusing mistake, rather than something inadvertently rude/offensive.

Re: Hockey Media

It made me happy to see a lot of the big-name hockey media members sending him messages that basically said "buck up buddy - you're still great"

It also reminded me of someone on the SDP telling the story of a cancer patient kid who loved Friedge and wanted to meet him but ended up backing out because he was bald from chemo. Friedge heard the story and without telling anyone shaved his head and went on HNIC the next night bald to show the kid that it was ok.

(Caveats - I called him Friedge because I didn't want to look up how to spell his actual name and I'm lazy. And the story might not be entirely accurate because my memory is ehhhhh)
