Where is everyone?

Last summer we were going about a post a month, even before the PKane news broke. This post has been open almost a month now and has 1600 comments.

The fandom shrunk, probably. The casual RPF fans don't seem to come here anymore. And in general, I feel like fic output has been wayyyy down compared to this time last year.

Plus it's the offseason. People might be watching the Olympics/Suicide Squad/whatever.

I'm watching the Olympics.

Pierre McGuire's commentating on water polo! I realized this while half-watching the US v Hungary (women's) match right now on NBC and suddenly hearing a very familiar voice talking about how one of the players is also an avid surfer who collects sand wherever she goes and he wondered if she's been to the beach yet to get some here...

Ditto to anon above on Olympics and fandom shrinkage. On Olympics, both that it's drawing our usual fannish attention away, and there's less of the type of a sports void (sorry, baseball) that makes tiny off season news seem more important and report-worthy.


Also, a few days of broken email notifications really killed my compulsion to be up-to-the-minute on meme traffic, and there hasn't been anything worth responding to well after the fact.

Last summer there was Sid/Claude stuff from worlds to talk about and Nathan MacKinnon kept posting pictures with Sid. That was a bit of the discussion last year which isn't happening last year too.

Maybe we could post some more general threads like and discuss say specific tropes? Or some threads like a team building thread where we talk about sending a pairing on a team building exercise and what would happen, wasn't there a music thread too?

Tbqh I've been commenting here less lately because it seems like most of the new comments are talking about hockey news stuff I already saw elsewhere, and I mostly come to meme for rpf stuff. So I'd be down for more fic/trope centric threads!

I know that FFA has the trope of the post stuff but that goes way too quick and it'd be fun to have some hockey specific threads.

Olympics. I'm way more invested in swimming right now, hockey will be there in a few weeks.

Olympics for me too, though it's mostly been rugby sevens and field hockey I've been invested in.

Swimming is where my attention is right now, too. I basically drop everything when Ledecky gets into the pool.

The email notifications bug froze meme for a whole weekend and meme has been on a hair trigger for wank for a long time now which depresses participation. It'll speed back up when there's more news at least.

The PKane news broke August 6th. I don't think that's enough to say how we were doing last year in comparison on a monthly basis, because you've got stuff like the NHL awards, the draft and free agency all the way up until the beginning of July.

That said, whether it's accurate or not, this year *feels* slower. In addition to everything that has already come up, I think maybe there was just more news spread throughout the summer for us to discuss. I listen to a lot of hockey podcasts, and pretty much gave up all the others I used to listen to. Last summer, a lot of them had quick episodes when big news broke. This summer, nobody's posting. I've already completely caught up on "Welcome to Nightvale," just to have something to listen to on my commute, and I hadn't listened to an ep since October 2014.

Also, I was looking at last year's summer posts, and one of the first things I saw was about Sidney Crosby being a secret lizard person. Meme heavily discourages tangents like that these days.

Meme does have those tangents, they're just now 300% more likely to devolve into accusations of colonialism so mostly no one bothers.

Ugh. Can we talk about podcasts? I need something new for summer running and all my hockey podcast are on hiatus.

Oilers Now. I don't even really care about the Oilers, but it's two hours of mostly hockey every day even during the doldrums of August.

Hockey podcasts only or is everything fair game? Because I can gladly rec some comedy podcasts that I love.

Hockey wise, the PDOcast has been updating really regularly in the summer and always great if you're into stats or want to get into stats.

And I've got a Podcast q of my own: Devils fans or anyone who listens, how is the Have Another Doughnut podcast? Is it worth a listen?

I keep seeing PDOcast recced, but I tried two different episodes and couldn't stand it. Both times they spent a bunch of time yelling at strawmen, and I don't mind people having strong opinions. But I want them to talk about their opinions. Not mock the stupid opinions of generic people who don't exist. Like, if they could at least quote someone they disagreed with instead of just making up stuff. They especially spent a lot of time mocking hypothetical player rankings as if anyone could factually claim that there is a singular "best." They just aren't careful with their language, at all. They sound like arrogant assholes like they think they are Tyler Dellow, but without Dellow's ability to apply stats to systems.

Maybe I just listened to particular poor eps. Is there a specific one you'd recommend?

I don't know if it's just the people I know or a trend I've totally imagined, but I feel like a lot of people who got into hockey RPF in that 2012-2013/14 wave have moved on to be fairly active in mainstream hockey circles like hockey twitter, reddit, etc. and less so in fannish spaces. It's kind of a natural progression imo, and is half true for myself as well though tbf I started as a hockey fan got into fic and am now at the point where I only interact with RPF through here sporadically. It's kind of a form of fandom migration I guess.

If it is a real trend, I'm a part of it. I read fic and occasionally interact with rpf fans but I'm mostly a hockey twitter person.

I think it is somewhat true. I know that a lot of the people I used to talk to just don't seem to be around as much anymore, but it doesn't feel like natural fannish migration to me. I guess because (outside of people who get jobs with teams or something) I don't understand why people can't maintain an interest in both the RPF fandom and the sports one. I think they go together very synergistically.
