Oh god, I hadn't even thought of that. It's hard because, like, you don't want to wish for a hockey player not to be socially conscious, especially about issues affecting his own community, but... ugh. I hope he's ok, and if he does feel badly about this, that he has people supporting him :/

I don't want to be mistaken as supporting Tortorella for his remarks, but it's not like what he said was a level of racism above and beyond the kind of stuff Jones has probably been hearing his whole life, especially in hockey. This is not to say any of that shit is acceptable, but rather that NHL hockey as a whole is really racist, and I am not more worried about Jones than I was a week ago.

His coach, someone he likely respects and who has a massive amount of control over his professional future (which he must be acutely aware of especially given how CBJ acquired him to begin with), has essentially said that a black man playing under him who protests against racism and police brutality during a game will suffer from professional consequences. That's totally different from hearing racist crap on ice, or even in the locker room.

When I hear Tortorella et al say things like that about "disrespecting the anthem," I hear "black lives don't matter," or at least, "black lives <<< falling into line, obeying authority, respecting a symbol of something that doesn't respect you but that is important to me." I know I'm not the only POC upset with this and with hockey's racism generally, I don't think it takes a big leap of imagination to think about how much harder it must be for players.

He also said it publicly, to the press. Rightly or wrongly, players seem to draw a line between what happens on ice, what happens in the room, and what their public lives and stances are. For Tortorella to say this this way is a big deal. And someone having experienced terrible racism their whole lives doesn't mean that when something like this happens and it's coming from your coach of all people, it magically has no impact on you.

Thanks for explaining. I hadn't really thought the nature of that professional relationship through. (...also now I am more worried for Jones than I was a week ago, lol.) And I agree 100% with your second paragraph.

You're welcome! Yeah, I'm not worried in the sense that I think he must be having, like, anxiety attacks right now about being in immediate danger of being benched or traded by Torts, but... it's just unsettling to hear this publicly from an authority figure, and there's very little chance his teammates, the people he spends the most time around, would understand or support him, so I hope he has someone who will. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to woobify Jones or anything, who knows what he actually does think about the situation, maybe he doesn't care, maybe he agrees with Torts. It's just hard to think of a black player potentially in that situation.

I think so. His Twitter likes are full of astrology memes, it's hilarious.

I definitely saw a post on tumblr to that effect like...a year ago. It's strangely endearing.

Is that supposed to have some kind of significance that I'm not understanding?
