What do you do when meme discusses a story you wrote nonnies?? Skip it? Read it as the most honest concrit? Valiantly defend your writing decisions while pretending they aren't your decisions?? Hide your eyes in shame??

It's happened, and I read it. Some of it I actually agreed with (I did miss the one thing I shouldn't have missed) and some of it I disregarded totally. If you're going to read it then you have to sort through the concrit and figure out what's useful, because not all of it is all the time.

+1

I usually avoid the thread the rest of the day and survey afterwards. Nothing's been that big a deal; I enjoyed the extra comments and took the occasional finicky complaints with a grain of salt.

I've been mentioned before but have not had serious criticism or even more than a line or so of commentary. On other anon memes, I've had mixed reviews or criticism. I think you have to be okay sorting through what's useful to you and what isn't. If it's OTT criticism that's weirdly personal or where the person doesn't have anything specific, it's best ignored. If they bring up something, maybe they're right, maybe there's something you could have done better but it's not what they think it is, maybe it's something you knew about but couldn't fix in time, maybe they're wrong and no other reader will feel the same, etc.

I've had criticism that seemed to be based in specific personal experiences, which I easily disregarded. You can't control how everyone interprets your fic.

I meant more like someone's criticizing you and not your story.

Ah, yeah, that's definitely a thing. I'd say disregarding both, then.

What others have said - you have to be able to separate potentially useful crit from personal reactions. If you feel like you can't do that, then you might want to skip or have a friend check out the thread and vet it for you first.

Personally, I really like getting unfiltered reader reactions to my stuff, whatever those reactions are, but lots of people feel differently.

Pretend I didn't see it, although I did have one comment here where I wanted to reply and say I KNOW I KNOW I TRIED BUT I CAN'T WRITE PORN SORRY FOR DISAPPOINTING YOU, lmao. (I obviously did not.)

da

Oh yeah, to add to what other people have said: whatever you do, DON'T ENGAGE, especially as yourself. That is a terrible position to put yourself in - a bunch of anons vs one unanon author. Just. Don't do it.

I read it, but I don't respond in the thread.

I had one of my stories get some pretty extensive discussion here a while back, with very mixed reviews ranging from "this is the best thing ever" to "this is horrible and I had to nope out of it/I read the whole thing and am mad that I won't get those minutes of my life back."

In between, there was quite a bit of "I liked it except for This One Thing" going on, with a lot of different One Things, and that gave me more to think about than "this is the best"/"this is the worst" comments.

"This One Thing" being a specific trope that IMO was important to the fic but a lot of people seemed to think it would be better without? Sorrynotsorry, if you don't like that trope this isn't the fic for you.

"This One Thing" being a characterization issue my betas pointed out to me, I rewrote until they told me it was fixed, and some people here still were bothered by? I'm keeping it in mind but I'm not sure I could have told the story I was trying to tell while "fixing" this problem to the nonnie-critics' satisfaction. I didn't respond at the time but I still grumble about it when related things come up. That's the one criticism that really bothered me.

"This One Thing" being an aspect of the ending that felt a little too tacked on to tie up loose ends? I agree, I wasn't 100% sold on that part either and did a bad job of telling-not-showing, I'll try to do better next time, and I have a fic in progress that is trying to turn the subplot I failed to do justice to into its own central story.

"This One Thing" being a specific complaint about my writing style that I've heard before in other contexts and will no doubt hear again? I'm working on it, but it's a flaw of mine that I don't know if I can get rid of completely. Maybe I'll poke my betas into looking for it more?

On the positive side, there was one particular compliment this fic got that I go back and re-read every time I fall into "OMG I CANNOT WRITE MY WAY OUT OF A WET PAPER BAG!" sadness. It meant a lot and let me know I did something very right that I was trying to do.

First I hid my eyes in shame, then later I was flattered at the extra attention.

Meme doesn't seem to discuss that much fic nowadays. More likely if it's from an exchange, it's terrible in an OTT or unusual way, or it was good but there was one part it that was annoying or nagging in a have to get off your chest way.

I read it, and I found it very useful, it really helped me clarify the things which hadn't quite worked. I wanted to post and say thanks, but I figured that would be very awkward.

I like it when people talk about something I wrote unprompted so I figure I have to be ready to deal if people don't like something I wrote.
