Re: What's Up With Your Team- Age of Arbitration

The trade is done and I don't see the point in it.

I'd guess the point is for ass-saving PR reasons, because of how unpopular the trade was in Montreal.

I think you're right about the debate about "risk" somewhat missing the point that this really seems to be a party line determined to attack Subban's character. Someone else in the reddit thread mentioned the title quote probably wasn't even the most damning remark that Price made -- it was comparing Subban to Weber and suggesting more or less that Subban's problem was that he doesn't "buy in" to the team concept and work ethic, unlike Weber.

The whole situation seems weird. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Habs management was pressuring players into making these statements (the article says Emelin commented "timidly") but I also wouldn't be at all surprised if this is what those players actually believe.

Yeah, that occurred to me basically immediately after I hit enter, lol.

This just seems weird and kind of upsetting. (Especially questioning Subban's work ethic? Wtf.) There's a certain amount of character assassination after unpopular trades, but I don't feel like I usually hear it from the players. I think they probably believe it at least somewhat, though I wouldn't be surprised either if Habs management had a hand in it.

The Habs in general seem like one big weird situation. I guess we'll see how it shakes out over the next couple seasons.

Yeah, thinking about it, what seems most plausible to me is that they do believe it at least somewhat, but management is encouraging them to talk openly about it. Because, yeah, this is above and beyond what I feel is the normal kind of post-trade character assassination, which seems to happen more noisily in the press and much more tacitly with the team? I can see how other players might resent Subban's style of play on a team with a risk-averse system, even if evaluating Subban himself as a player who is a risk to have on the team is off the mark.

Carey Price really, really wants that 8th year on his contract, I guess.
