DA I would feel too bad for McDavid to wish that on him

Actually a lot of meme's comments already having me feeling bad for McDavid

I feel bad because I think he won't be able to lead up to the level of hype heaped on him.

That being said, I don't think he should be excused from critical analyses of his play because of the hype.

IA. The hype is so huge though. So many people expect him to win the Art Ross next year. He could, but I don't think he will. But so what if he doesn't. He's got nearly a decade before he's even considered in his prime.

Everyone just wants it for him so badly. I think it'd just be better for him if they just gave him regular hockey player chances instead of "It's okay, you're so great, buddy" ones.

If you told me to bet on who would win the Art Ross next year, I'm betting Crosby, hands down. I'm not even sure McDavid ends up top five in scoring.

The amount of comments I've seen about him being the best player in the league season is ridiculous. And even if he was the best Team NA forward, his linemates on the Oilers won't be as good, or as fast.

In my fantasy daydream world, someone who was five or six this year ends up with some crazy amount of points and shoots up to the top just for the fun of it, but it'll probably be one of the three or four people who have been in the top three or four for the past year or two. Crosby sounds like as good of a bet as any.

People seem to be split down the middle on McDavid. Either they're getting annoyed with him getting so much playing time or they think he's the best player ever and will win every ward and they can't wait until he's the youngest captain ever and will win the Oilers the cup.

...wasn't Gaudreau tied for sixth in scoring? I'd enjoy that fantasy daydream world. We'd get a great Boring Monahan tweet out of it.

Plus it's a huge trophy and he's very small.

Gaudreau winning it would be amazing.

I'll always hate Mark Stone because of it.

He was the best offensive player on a team that went on an insane, record-breaking run and had been the best player on the Senators not named Erik Karlsson that entire season. It wasn't that far-fetched of a nomination.

On this subject I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen more Eichel-Calder salt. Maybe I just don't run in the right Eichel-mania circles??

Re: Game day thread 19 Sept 2016

I feel the Eichel-Calder salt would be a lot more freeflowing had McDavid won despite his injury.

I'm still kind of salty that Klingberg was never really in consideration considering he and Ekblad had basically identical stats with a month less playing time. But he wasn't 18 and Canadian, so there was no chance.

Lol, I'm salty because I love him and wanted him to get an award, I don't give two shits who deserved it more. Salt is not a rational emotion.

I think a lot of the people expecting McDavid to win the Art Ross/be the best player in the league next season are, explicitly or not, patterning their expectations based on Crosby's second season.

This is what I was going to say. Despite all the talk of "generational players" every year, the only players who have done what a "generational player" is expected to do--show up and change the game immediately, consistently, and irrevocably--are Sid and Ovi, and even both of them had major stumbles due to injury or coaching/"mental issues" (whatever the fuck that means) in their first several years. But the fact remains, no one aside from Sid and Ovi has dominated the entire league (not just rookies or new players) from the outset in any consistent way from day 1 for more than a year since them over 10 years ago, so the hockey media is desperate for it.

Re: Game day thread 19 Sept 2016

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen that much talk. I think people are actually pretty good at drawing a line between "generational" and elite franchise players. I do think McDavid has the potential for being generational. That said, when Crosby&Ovechkin won their Art Rosses, Gretzky wasn't still playing.

Also, my money is on Stamkos this year.

Statistically, for forwards, it'd be more like 4-6 years, no?

Yeah, I get why people are sick and tired of the media narrative, but the guy himself has already had a pretty rough start, really. I wouldn't wish more on him.
