This is super interesting to me as I didn't know that it was something the teams could do.

He's out with a concussion and they asked him to come to Florida to get monitored by the team medical personnel. It's not like they just yanked him.

Oh I know. I just think it's interesting because usually it seems like the federations have the power in this situation. It makes me wonder if there's something additional in the agreement with the NHL that delegates the power.

I don't get what you mean? The teams always have that power. Hence, why there's even a debate about whether the NHL players will go to the Olympics or not. If the NHL doesn't voluntarily allow the players to go, then any who go without permission could be suspended from their teams for not reporting.

I mean that if Ekblad had gotten hurt at the world championships or at the Olympics my understanding is that the Panthers wouldn't get the final say in shutting him down. That that would be determined by Hockey Canada/USA Hockey instead. In this case it sounds to me like TNA said "meh - he's recovering and may be well enough to play at some point in the tournament" and the Panthers said "nope. He's done."

I think you're picturing something way too formal. I don't think there's a hierarchical org chart for these events that says who has the final say. I'd guess it was more like the Panthers said, "we'd prefer to check him out ourselves, and also, you don't need him" and Team North America didn't really care if he stuck around and cheered from the press box or flew back to Florida.
