This is the twenty-sixth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

Oh man, all the whining from Backes etc about this tweet is killing me.

It's hilarious how mad some people are.

"Team Baby" might have to give up their nickname to their elders...

It's nice because I absolutely needed more reasons to dislike David Backes.

I can't actually tell if this is sarcasm or not, but same, because I always inexplicably liked him despite thinking he was a dirty player, but wow he's not had a good last few weeks in the press. "Distasteful" and "aggravating" indeed.

I've never liked him so this is just more fuel for my fire. Saving puppies doesn't excuse you from head shots.

And stay away from Phil. Dammit.

It looks like most of the guys other than Backes were just trying to get out of commenting, lol, but Backes really took it personally. It will be "remembered", really? He sounds so petty.

It's so funny. If i didn't know what Phil said, I would think he called them out personally based on their reactions.

I mean, he does have a point with the part about that was how the team was constructed, although I strongly disagree with him that that was how the team needed to be built. Unless he meant it needed to be built that way to demonstrate that style of play isn't going to win. But I would have thought Oshie talking to the world last night about grit vs. skill would be more embarrassing or annoying to the players, even though everyone already knew Canada was a far more skilled team.

You'd like to think so, but guys like Backes buy into the grit narrative hard. And it's not like Oshie's comment implied that USA had no skill. It was basically a super laughable way of saying "We know we're the underdogs but we can win because we have more grit/character/heart," which lol. That's how guys who know they aren't the most skilled conceive of their own value. Whereas just because a team is constructed to be gritty doesn't mean or justify leaving Kessel off it (Kane isn't exactly the most gritty player either), but Backes knows that the only reason he made the team is because of the philosophy that left Kessel off it. So he's not exactly wrong to take it personally, but lol at that petulance.

I imagine Backes buys into the grit narrative because he's not tipping the NHL talent scale.

That's how guys who know they aren't the most skilled conceive of their own value.

Except isn't Backes' version of grit usually trying to beat up on kids who are smaller than him and then getting his ass handed to him for it? Surely that's much more humiliating than anything Phil Kessel can say about him.

As somebody said on Twitter, if he gets that upset over one tweet, he's in for a rude awakening the first time he plays poorly for the Bruins.

I would understand it if it was actual fringe (at least for this sort of national team) players like Abdelkader taking offense since they're inherently being insulted, but it's the guys who would have made it anyway even under competent management. This is really silly.

To be fair, the only guy other than Backes who's been quoted on this and fits that description is Parise. And most of the quotes (including Parise's) look like the responses of people who were pushed to say something about the tweets by reporters and wanted to stop talking about it as quickly as possible.

Is there some reason to think he was talking about this tweet? The way it was phrased I thought he was talking about the stuff from the older guys who were on the 96 team.

"I understand there’s hard feelings if you weren’t picked for the team or whatever"

I don't think anyone expects guys who played in 96 to have hard feelings about not making the 2016 team.

(He also was probably asked specifically about Kessel's tweet, even if his quotes don't mention Kessel by name.)

Yeah, I didn't see that article until after I posted. To be fair though, that article makes it sound like the players hadn't even see the orig tweet and were reacting to questions about it.
