But I would have thought Oshie talking to the world last night about grit vs. skill would be more embarrassing or annoying to the players, even though everyone already knew Canada was a far more skilled team.

You'd like to think so, but guys like Backes buy into the grit narrative hard. And it's not like Oshie's comment implied that USA had no skill. It was basically a super laughable way of saying "We know we're the underdogs but we can win because we have more grit/character/heart," which lol. That's how guys who know they aren't the most skilled conceive of their own value. Whereas just because a team is constructed to be gritty doesn't mean or justify leaving Kessel off it (Kane isn't exactly the most gritty player either), but Backes knows that the only reason he made the team is because of the philosophy that left Kessel off it. So he's not exactly wrong to take it personally, but lol at that petulance.

He is tipping the "best American centers not banished to the U24 team" talent scale, though. There's, what, two American centers eligible for the team better than him?

You mean out of the American centers who didn't end up making the team, right? Just off the top of my head, Johnson (who should have had Backes' spot), Stastny, Bjugstad. Also, Dubinsky, who was scratched.

Except isn't Backes' version of grit usually trying to beat up on kids who are smaller than him and then getting his ass handed to him for it? Surely that's much more humiliating than anything Phil Kessel can say about him.

Honestly I wish they would just admit that it was a poorly constructed and coached team and they'll do better next time. I mock Canada all the time when they have "summits" after they lose. But uh. I think we need a summit.

We don't need a summit because our development model is great and we have more and better players than ever. It's literally just the USMNT that's a tire fire.
