#26 — Vanek! with a Jurco

This is the twenty-sixth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

I don't know which specific players you guys are referring to, but the players I've seen who have "outside friends" are usually guys they played with at a young age or people they went to school with. Or friends of friends they played with.

Excluding guys who are really active with a group or charity (like the November Project or something) I can't think of any players who have friends where it seems like they met them through non-hockey channels.

I think they probably meet people in ways connected to their being hockey players. Like, you're a pro hockey player. You're probably circulating in certain crowds. But I don't think every single hockey player only knows people they grew up playing with and/or teammates. Some of them marry non-hockey celebrities of one stripe or another, and I'm sure there are opportunities to make friends in those social groups as well.

When Ben Lovejoy was traded back to Pittsburgh, he talked about getting messages from many non-team-related friends he still had in city. I suspect wives/girlfriends might be a big part in these sorts of connections, depending on their jobs/interests etc.
