I am trying to get ready for work, twitter, I don't have time to scroll to find whatever rpf related wank you're all reacting to this morning. Can you just link whatever you're wanking to?

Re: Fandom Venting

same tbh

Re: Fandom Venting

mte, i'm lost. something about underage players?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I'm starting to think it's one of those prank things, where everybody complains obliquely about something without linking, because they're actually making it up.

konecny @ tumblr accidentally reblogged a post about pedophilia research on her hockey blog instead of her academic blog. an "anonymous" user responded with a long post conflating pedophilia apologia with shipping teenaged hockey players. it's been a mess on twitter from there

Wow, "here is my anonymous friend's essay on a post that was accidentally reblogged and then deleted, I am posting it for them in its entirety but they want to remain anonymous!!!!" is one of the more wanky ways to do a call out post that I've seen. Why didn't they just send it to the original person's inbox as an anon if they knew she was going to see it anyways?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
lolin' @ the idea that junior hockey players, of all the groups of people in this world, need to be protected from a 20 year old "sexualizing" them.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
As opposed to the 19 year old! Lol.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Obviously junior hockey culture is incredibly shitty and fucked-up, but that doesn't make it impossible for someone to be creepy about a junior hockey player, or even junior hockey players as a group of people.

(I mean this entirely separately from the post above, which I don't agree with. Even beyond the fact that it's by definition not pedophilia even if one is being creepy about a sixteen-year-old, the reblogged post that sparked the callout wasn't even bad.)

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I do think there's a point to be made in examining how fandom talks about underage players, but I think the "anon" who did it went about this totally the wrong way. It seems like they've had a bone to pick about this for a while and chose to frame their argument as a call out of one specific person, probably for ~drama, but it's petty and their argument surrounding the original post excusing/supporting pedophilia is inaccurate and way off base. It might be a good thing that they started a conversation about this, but I'm uncomfortable with basically accusing somebody of being a pedophile because they're interested in junior hockey.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, honestly, I think the call-out OP probably just thought this was a great opportunity to call people who ship juniors guys or, gasp, think some of them are attractive creepy.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
And if it's juniors guys who are 18+, I'm not sure what the point of moralizing about it is.

I have noticed an increasing trend lately where the definition of "child" or just "young" kind of...shifts upwards, I guess? It's weird, because there's two competing things - one where the second someone hits 18 it's creepy for them to be friends with/follow anyone underage, and the other where young adults are treated almost like children ("X needs protection, they're only 19/20/21, leave them alone", etc).

I have some theories as to why they're both happening, but it's definitely something I've noticed both in hockey tumblr and as a part of general tumblr culture.

...which is to say that there may be some moralizing about how young the guys are even if they're 18+ because of that second trend. Sorry, I realized after I hit post that I left out the one sentence that actually responds to your comment.

I've noticed it on tumblr and also like. With young white men who have committed crimes.

na

I've seen people on tumblr claim it's inappropriate for someone over the age of 18 to interact with someone under the age of 18. Like, ever. I don't understand.

Re: Fandom Venting

I mean, at least in my corner of fandom, players don't get any attention until their draft year, and even that comes with plenty of jokes about them being too young, so I don't think there's much to say about how fandom talks about underage players. I could see some argument about age-appropriate interest in juniors players, but that age would have to be much higher than early twenties. Especially since juniors teams tend to be more skewed towards 18/19/20 than (15/)16/17.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you. I think "hey, try not to be a creep when talking about somebody who's 16" is a valid point but I don't even see that very much/at all. I reread the original post and it very much seems like the anon OP has some kind of issue with shipping juniors players in general for whatever reason and decided to take it out on this one specific person. I really don't understand the logic jump between reblogging/deleting a post about treating pedophilia and some kind of tacit acknowledgement of being a pedophile that's implied in the OP's post.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, I was too flippant. They are vulnerable in many ways and they have been abused or catfished or taken advantage of. And RPF always has a baseline value of creepiness tbh. But a 20-something year old making cutsey buddy-buddy primers of publically available pictures and life history that has no overt sexual content is fairly inoffensive. They aren't as bad as that Seguin one, for example, if I remember alright.

Even aside from the pedophilia stuff, the rhetoric in that post is just kinda off mark and wrong-headed. I don't think that many people are writing fic about these players solely BECAUSE they are young "barely legal" hockey players. Instead people are Canadian and are really engaged with their local team and really like the league and the way their faves play hockey, or they liked the McJesus draft class narrative. And those players happen to be young. So why call it fetishistic? Just to be outraged?

The way they treat sex is also not good in my opinion. Sex is not an inherently bad or dirty thing. Obvi. Healthy sexual exploration is fine. Calling people "barely legal" like it should have scare quotes around it or acting like an 18 year old is pure and virtuous and should be protected from horny 21 year olds is just roll eyes, without even taking into account the demographic we're talking about.

I admit I'm kind of backing out hockey fandom because the focus seems to be on guys juuuust young enough to be my biological kids now, whereas when I started it was on the older juggernaut pairing guys. I'm not that old, but old enough to feel weird creeping through a 19 year old's IG. That said, there is pretty much never anything to be won from pearl-clutching and finger-wagging at fandom's morals. Don't like, don't read, ship and let ship, etc.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I wonder how much is last year's draft narrative, though. I didn't see it quite as much with Matthews etc, and I doubt the focus will be as big on Nolan Patrick or whoever next year.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
My corner of fandom is currently all about the 2016 draft and I've barely even heard of these kids. I am way too old (35) to be checking out their shirtless lake pics (I know a lot of younger people who are closer in age to them, and I'm not judging at all)

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Hmm, that's definitely not mine. I follow a few people who are invested in terms of national teams, but not really for fic.

Re: Fandom Venting

well, that's the dumbest thing i've read today.

I guess I've chosen my Twitter well, because I haven't seen a word of this. Yuck.
