So they were roommates and friendly at the 2006 Olympics but supposedly things went sour after that when Ovechkin punched out Malkin's agent agent at a nightclub in Russia. It kind of escalated into this whole thing where people were worried about how they'd manage playing together in 2010 and some rumours about, I think, Kovalchuk having to mediate and get them back on good terms. It would actually be great fodder for fic if someone went and strung all the different rumours (they refused to interact with each other at one of the NHL awards, some stuff about one of them sleeping with the other's GF, jealousy over draft order on Malkin's side and the Cup win on Ovechkin's side later) into a coherent narrative.
