Re: your second question-

I think Marner/Matthews may be well on its way to juggernaut season, if fic production stays up through next season. The problem standing something really taking off is that a lot of the more prolific, good writers in this fandom are all over the place ship-wise.

*emerging

Other options being McDavid/Strome and Mcdavid/Eichel but they're not really putting out that much either? I'm really having a hard time predicting if there's ever going to be another one again or if the time is done.

Strome/Marner too. Probably less so going forward, since they never play each other anymore and won't be teammates for the foreseeable future unless they go to a Worlds together.

Ngl I far prefer it to McDavid/Strome and Marner/Matthews. I'm very much in the Marner/Strome and McEichel camps.

I like that one too. There's a good enemies to friends start to it.

I went with Marner/Matthews because I feel like being on the same team (and not being complete social media shut-ins) will really help in the long run. They're not my fave rookie pair, but they're who I see the most ship potential in currently.

Same team and unlikely to be traded (anytime soon) is incredibly important to get a juggernaut going. It makes everything a lot easier.

Same team and franchise players? I wonder why McDavid/Draisaitl hasn't caught on then. Are all the people writing McJesus already locked in with the other two McDavid pairings as their OTPs? I hope it will change if McDavid & Draisaitl keep on their intensity & potentially develop into 1C & 2C mainstays of a really good Oilers team. After all, a similar dynamic seems to be working for Sid/Geno?

I guess time will tell. It very well could pick up but as of now it seems like if you're gonna do McDavid, it's Strome or Eichel. Leon Draisaitl/Connor McDavid currently has 23 fics and quite a few are either secondary or gen.

I kinda wish I were a BNF just so I could make Draisatl/McDavid fetch happen, they seem like a great pairing that has long-term potential and would be infinitely less annoying than the leafs rookies (I don't really mind them as a pairing, but lord their fans seem to be especially obnoxious).

Yeah, Marner/Matthews lacks an lightgetsin or a LadyJanelly or an oflights, never mind someone on thehoyden's level. And those kind of authors seem entrenched in their OTPs or have moved on to non-Leafs rare pairings (or another fandom, in hoyden's case).

Re: the a-to-z of you and me by capebretons

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of the authors I tend to think of as "good" writers (whatever my opinion is worth) seem to write rarer pairs. Which is great since I like variety, but there isn't anyone leading a juggernaut.

Re: the a-to-z of you and me by capebretons

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I almost exclusively read rare or rarer pairs and no juggernauts, and it's at least in part because that's where the writers I like are. The variety is great too, since you're less likely to see the same tropes and characterizations repeated ad nauseum.

I'm sure there's probably at least a few authors I'd like that I'm missing out on because I don't read Sid/Geno or Benn/Seguin (or Kane/Toews too, not that I'd touch that with a ten foot pole now, but I didn't like it before either) but I'm more than okay with that.

This makes me want to know who people think the "good" writers in fandom are... I know I have my specific ideas, but I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks.

Re: the a-to-z of you and me by capebretons

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This inevitably results in people shitting all over other people's favorite writers - and I'm not talking just measured criticism, but "lol that author is total trash." Pass, sorry. :(

I mean, there's deke consensus on a few: ionthesparrow, to name one.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, imo their fic is consistently decently *written* even if it doesn't always work for me personally.

(if i had the energy to find it, i'd link you the big huge lj meme thread that tore "down on the brazos" to pieces, though. afaict, the only things this fandom actually has a true consensus opinion on are maybe "the nhl hates fun" and "gary bettman is evil".)

Re: the a-to-z of you and me by capebretons

(Anonymous) 2017-04-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that fic. I don't think I've ever really liked an ionthesparrow fic because it often feels ATG in a more hyperintellectual way. Like that horse racing one? Neither of those people resembled Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in any way, but the prose was good I guess.

She should be writing original fic and she basically is, IMO. I don't get what I want to get out of hockey RPF from her.

Oh, man, I remember that fic - it was terrible. I think she's good and that was a misstep.

Yeah, I don't really enjoy them, either. Objectively, I can tell they're really good, but a lot of the stuff that works for their fans I find incredibly frustrating and gives me "not" origfic vibes. I probably wouldn't recommend them to anyone who's looking for shippy fic.

Marner/Matthews has had 50 completed, 1k+ fics posted in the last four months. They're looking like a pretty likely candidate to me.

Damn it. I really don't like Marner in anything which puts the new juggernaut right out for me.

Same. Also, they haven't been playing together at all, even on the PP, so for me it really lowers the ship potential. At this point, Matthews/Nylander makes more sense.

I've never seen the actual rise of a pairing in real time. I've always come in when it's already well established or on the decline, so I admit I don't know what it looks like.

Thanks stats nonnie!
