Yeah, a lot of the authors I tend to think of as "good" writers (whatever my opinion is worth) seem to write rarer pairs. Which is great since I like variety, but there isn't anyone leading a juggernaut.

Agreed. I almost exclusively read rare or rarer pairs and no juggernauts, and it's at least in part because that's where the writers I like are. The variety is great too, since you're less likely to see the same tropes and characterizations repeated ad nauseum.

I'm sure there's probably at least a few authors I'd like that I'm missing out on because I don't read Sid/Geno or Benn/Seguin (or Kane/Toews too, not that I'd touch that with a ten foot pole now, but I didn't like it before either) but I'm more than okay with that.

This makes me want to know who people think the "good" writers in fandom are... I know I have my specific ideas, but I'm curious as to what everyone else thinks.

This inevitably results in people shitting all over other people's favorite writers - and I'm not talking just measured criticism, but "lol that author is total trash." Pass, sorry. :(

I mean, there's deke consensus on a few: ionthesparrow, to name one.

yeah, imo their fic is consistently decently *written* even if it doesn't always work for me personally.

(if i had the energy to find it, i'd link you the big huge lj meme thread that tore "down on the brazos" to pieces, though. afaict, the only things this fandom actually has a true consensus opinion on are maybe "the nhl hates fun" and "gary bettman is evil".)

I remember that fic. I don't think I've ever really liked an ionthesparrow fic because it often feels ATG in a more hyperintellectual way. Like that horse racing one? Neither of those people resembled Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in any way, but the prose was good I guess.

She should be writing original fic and she basically is, IMO. I don't get what I want to get out of hockey RPF from her.

anon downthread-

Yeah, this, basically.

I really loved the first Hockey at the End of the World fic, because I liked how it played up the brutality of pro sports, in high relief. So I liked it for the worldbuilding, basically, not for the characters. The writing was really good, though.

Re: ionthesparrow writing origfic, basically - I feel like I'm reading origfic when I'm reading her, in the sense that it's more work and I have to pay closer attention.

I really like her bjugstad/rau fic, more than I liked her earlier stuff. It feels very... complete? There's a sense of team? I don't know.

Oh, man, I remember that fic - it was terrible. I think she's good and that was a misstep.

na

Yeah, I don't really enjoy them, either. Objectively, I can tell they're really good, but a lot of the stuff that works for their fans I find incredibly frustrating and gives me "not" origfic vibes. I probably wouldn't recommend them to anyone who's looking for shippy fic.
