Thanks! Toews doesn't mention Kane by name though?

Re: Fandom Venting

That's why I used the word "implied."

No, Kane's political leanings probably hasn't been stated anywhere. The closest a quick Google could find was from '14, and that article only mentions his grandfather founding a "Democratic club" in Buffalo. His personal politics could go either way. I have no real urge to defend Kane of anything, him not being a Trump supporter wouldn't cancel everything else out, but the person unthread is probably equating one evil to all evils.

You know what, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a guy who yells slurs about Jewish people in a bar voted for Trump.

And I doubt these guys ever think about politics beyond what their parents told them to be, and that claiming that a liberal Would Never has its own set of issues, but w/e.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-04-15 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Now now, it's not all what their parents believe. Some of them become way more racist, sexist, and right-wing as a result of their social group, too. /has unfortunately seen way too much of this

Kane's family is supposedly known as a Democratic powerhouse in that region.

Plus I honestly can't see Toews being so attached to someone whose views are so opposite to his own, which makes me think even if Kane isn't a left-wing hippie like Toews, he isn't far right either.

The Blackhawks visited the White House three times during Obama's tenure as president and Kane got excited to see Obama, so he strikes me as a Democrat.

Sure, Jan.

"Democratic powerhouse" do you actually read the nonsense you type or are you too far up a rapist's ass to see anything but your weirdo fantasy version of him?

Re: Fandom Venting

Being a Democrat and being an alcoholic rapist isn't contradictory, and pretending otherwise is inaccurate. And bizarre.

I didn't say the two are mutually exclusive at all, and I don't believe that. I just think it's ridiculous what people will pull out of their ass to defend this prick and state it with authority.

Kane is a rich, white, blatantly racist, entitled frat boy. I don't think there's definitive proof either way until he puts on his MAGA hat, but those qualities do lean right on average.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"but those qualities do lean right on average"

They really don't and saying otherwise is what allows people on the left to get away with shit like that. I've met so many leftist guys that are incredibly racist & sexist, but when you call them out on it get indignant because "I'm a liberal of how dare you accuse me of being __-ist!!"

Re: Fandom Venting

I agree with you completely specifically about this, but re: a bit further upthread, I also think it's fair to assume concocting a groundless fantasy about Kane being a Democrat because he's friends with Toews, who would never!! makes the entire comment come off as an attempt to invent a narrative where Kane is a better person than he really is. If it were just about establishing facts, it would be enough to say that his family is publicly known to be Democrat and that could possibly have some bearing on his political allegiances. Pointing out the ugliness of such blatant ~reaching to invent this narrative about someone so awful isn't the same as saying that Democrats can't be awful, too.

Sadly, sometimes being a leftist/liberal/Democrat (all using the US standard meaning of these terms since we started this at PKane) pretty much just means "I want legal weed". It is definitely no barrier to assorted isms ime.

There are NHL dudes that I would be legitimately sad about finding out they're shittier than dudebro baseline, but in general my expectations for rich athletes are ridiculously low. (Half my faves couldn't have voted for Trump because they're not American but I'm sure they're *all* friends with at least a couple dudes who did.)

No one is defending him, and you saying that makes it pretty clear that you are conflating the two. Assume I say doesn't make him less of a rapist after every sentence fragment here- there are plenty of rich, white, blatantly racist, entitled frat boys who are still left-leaning, especially if they grew up in a pointedly political family in a steady blue area. He clearly had a lot of respect for his grandparents. While there is little doubt playing hockey drenched him toxic ideas about... everything, I doubt much of it was specifically, politically charged enough to convince him to stray from their legacy. As you can read in the article linked above, hockey players generally just aren't that engaged.

Mostly, though, I just don't believe this thread is based on much more than desperately trying to shove him off our side, which really isn't good for much of anything.

Surprisingly enough, Democrats can be horrible people as well.

Yes, his family had some important Democratic members. Brian Higgins spoke in the House about Kane's grandmother upon her passing (excerpted here):

Mr. HIGGINS. Mr. Speaker, it is with a tremendous
amount of sadness that I report to
the House on the passing of a gentle woman
whose strength of character served her community
and the Democratic party in my hometown
of South Buffalo, NY, with tremendous
honor and distinction. More importantly, she
was a woman of valor—a wife, mother, and
grandmother of extraordinary stature, and
someone who will be missed for generations
to come.
Born Patricia Ann Doyle, Pat Kane was,
simply put, a legendary figure in Democratic
politics for decades. Pat and her husband,
Donald F. Kane—another legendary figure and
mentor to many of my contemporaries—were
part of a large extended family that, along with
leaders like former county and State Chairman
Joe Crangle and families like the Crottys,
Dillons, Keanes, Mahoneys, Whalens and
many others, ruled South Buffalo politics from
the 1960’s to well into the 1990’s.

tbh his grandma being Pat Kane in this story was a plot twist I had not expected.

Well, that explains a lot about why the local police are so willing to chauffeur him about and run his errands.

Please bring me your "democratic powerhouse" receipts as you have peaked my interest as to where you may have learned this information.

Pat Kane loved her family, loved her community,
and loved the Democratic party, and
her influence is seen in the many young
women who have become active in local politics
over the past several years. I am a better
person for having known Pat Kane, and our
community is better for her tireless service to
it.

Well, having read this on flatmeme I'm honestly just glad it's not an excerpt from an always a girl Kane fic.

Re: Fandom Venting

NA, but I know a kajillion nice, liberal families with shitty borderline-fascist grown sons. I don't even have an opinion on Kane's politics as I have no information on them, but "someone's parents/grandparents/whatever are super well known Democrats" doesn't lead me to draw any conclusions about their personal politics.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-04-18 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
You are completely out of touch with reality if you think being happy to be invited to the White House as a Stanley Cup winner and being friendly with Jonathan Toews is any sort of ~proof of not being a Trump supporter, let alone someone who'd actually call themselves a Democrat. This: "I honestly can't see Toews being so attached to someone whose views are so opposite to his own" is especially laughable about a guy who said about a rape investigation that nothing that happens outside the room matters to the team. Even the handful of guys who are even more publicly, outspokenly liberal or leftist than Toews is are friends with fellow hockey players who are Trump supporters, that's the reality of hockey culture.

Wow, I hadn't thought about this, but you're so right. I wonder if the two of them ever talk politics while they're Skyping about their kitten.
