Part of it is that the most annoying Leafs fans I know, on tumblr and IRL, are the ones who just started being Leafs fans within the last year or so. The ones who picked up the Leafs when they got cute and young and successful.

I don't want to be that anti-bandwagon, anti-new fans, anti-multi-team-fans grump but it's ten times worse coming from people who haven't earned the right to be that smug and obnoxious about the team's success.

I feel there's a certain degree of irony here, given how many new fandom people have latched onto the Caps in the last year or so.

Also not the other anon who had to clarify that they also weren't a Caps fan. Are we not allowed to say anything critical about Leafs fans without announcing any and all potential conflicts of interest and team affiliations first?

Ah, this I find kind of ironic considering how many times heated exchanges on meme have devolved into people accusing others/each other of being Pens fans, which a Caps fan just did a few comments ago. You're allowed to say whatever you want, that's just the hazard of an anon meme where you're continuing a conversation started by other people.

Calm down, no one even accused the other anon of being a Caps fan. It's an anon meme, no one's keeping your from saying whatever you want.

Eh, the Caps influx has been happening for awhile now, and the new fans have had time to acclimate. I'm sure Baby's First Season Caring About the Caps was tedious for a fair amount of people, too. The newest fans of any given team get there eventually, but if you stick out as a very loud and very new voice, it's not like people aren't going to notice.

I was wondering earlier what brought fandom to the capitals recently. They're pretty lacking in the things that would normally do it (long playoff runs, bromances, young very attractive players, etc)

I know that this might seem strange to you, nonnie, but there are people in this fandom who find players over the age of 20 attractive. Also, Wilson & Burakovsky are 23 & 22 respectively and quite decent looking too.

Neither K/T nor S/G were particularly young when those pairings took off. Conversely, if long playoff runs were what it takes, the Kings would have more fandom than just one pairing that got transplanted from Philadelphia. And I'm pretty sure every team has bromances; some just get more publicity outside the fanbase than others.

What teams/ships need in order to take off, in my opinion, are: a core of loud, enthusiastic fans who produce a lot of content (gifs, shippy meta, fic), and enough media about the team to work with. That's pretty much it. Sometimes all it takes is a couple such fans if they're already pretty big names.

Actually, I think a ~narrative also helps a lot, whether that's courtesy of the fans (Tyler Seguin: sad discarded party boy) or hockey media (The Great Eichel/McDavid Rivalry of 2015).

Also, that Caps benefit from having been secondary/tertiary in Pens fic semi-frequently and playing consistently decent in recent memory. The Winter Classic was a big boost and featured fandom's favorite type of pairing, but there was a steady enough foundation before that let it really take off.
