I pretty much think Mike Harringtonis a dick but this from the Puck Daddy article about Eichel rings a little true:

"Eichel has some growing up to do if he wants to be taken seriously as a leader. Leaders don’t undercut the coach as many times as Eichel has this season. Or make veiled comments about teammates, like Eichel clearly has about Josh Gorges more than once when referencing players who speak but don’t perform on the ice. Leaders don’t brood and pout in front of the media either like Eichel did to absurd levels Monday on locker cleanout day."

The thing is, Bylsma was a bad coach, is provably a bad coach, and had issues with the US Olympic Team (remember Parise and Suter's quotes?) and the Penguins at the end. If this is true, this is basically the only leverage he has as an RFA. In other jobs you can quit if you don't like your boss.

Apparently he was asked to speak on behalf of the players, too, so who knows.

ayrt

I don't disagree on Bylsma (but also don't remember the Suter/Parise quotes. Please send them my way I enjoy the Bylsma-shade).

I guess I more agree with Harrington's assessment that Jack should probably learn how to control (or just hide) his petulance or he's going to get roasted 24-7 by the NHL media.

Also wtf sabres - send your second year best player in to be the sacrificial lamb on your head coach?? That seems unnecessarily cruel.

I can't actually find the quotes, just some articles on how Parise didn't mean his comments as shade, lol. http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2014/02/25/parise-i-never-took-a-shot-at-bylsma-following-olympic-disappointment/

At this point I think he has to hide it because of the media narrative no matter what. Even when he's right (which imo he absolutely is about Bylsma. They're going nowhere with him as coach and he's stifling offensive creativity.)

It's r/hockey, so grain of salt, but they're saying Eichel was asked to go last in exit interviews so he could reiterate player opinions on the coach.

He has no leverage period. If he doesn't re-sign with Buffalo, he doesn't play. Does anyone think Eichel has the fortitude to sit out a year or two? No. So it's all just bluster that makes him look bad.

Nah, he has some. They can't use him to recruit free agents if he's not going to sell other players on the coach and team. And he doesn't have to sit out a year - without major roster improvements I doubt they win that much if he holds out ten games.

He'd have to get "coach killer" tattooed on his forehead. If he sits out until they fire the coach there's not even an argument - right or wrong it'll be tagged to him forever.

Doesn't he have another year under contract anyway? They can start negotiating July 1st, that's all.

If it actually came down to him refusing to sign, going through arbitration and getting a 1-year contract forced on him, not reporting, missing camp, not getting to use team facilities to stay in shape ... the team isn't going to be the one to blink at that point, no matter how many games Buffalo loses.

DA

Pretty sure he wouldn't be arbitration eligible.

Ah, yes, you're right. He's even worse off.

Also. Since it's been reported in a couple of places that Dan Quinn is the leading candidate for Sabres HC if Bylsma is fired - it's not the best look to send Jack in to basically clear the way for his former coach to get the job.
