I mean, you can start a thread somewhere else if you want later. It's not like the exchange threads we do have are getting tons of traffic.

I don't know where you getting the speedreading thing, either - I posted about the remix collection opening, and it took quite a while before anybody at all commented with their impressions of any of the fic.

It has nothing to do with the exchange thread or posting about collections opening. It's about when people start discussing the fics in the fic discussion thread. There's no point in starting a thread to discuss fic from a certain challenge, if people are already discussing that fic in the fic discussion thread.

DA - Could you explain the benefit of having that discussion in a separate thread, rather than in a thread within the fic discussion thread, or in the exchanges thread?

I'm the person who originally brought up missing exchange fic threads, and I don't care where they're located. I just miss when we used to create subthreads for each fic for people to drop their comments into whenever they got around to reading.

Iirc someone wanked about people 'setting up' threads without posting content.

It was fine for the most part, but there was one challenge with, like, nearly 200 fics or something and people kind of went ballistic at someone dropping 200 comments just for organizational purposes.

Ayrt - Thank you, that makes more sense.
I think there were a couple of reasons it hasn't happened so much, one was that time that someone created like 90 separate threads in one go for some exchange with a fairly unique system for sorting them. And not every fic has something that needs saying about it, I am one of the people who does discuss exchange fic and I only tend to have something to say about a quarter of them.

I think you get more discussion that way. Not just of the fics in the particular exchange. But also when the "fic discussion" thread isn't full of exchanges and new fics, I think people are more likely to bring up random fics to discuss.

I think a big reason why people don't randomly bring up fics they like, is that no one wants to invite criticism? Because deke is usually pretty, err, critical. And then fics people dislike seem to get brought up in fandom venting.

I think the fandom's less critical than it used to be. Or harsh. Or either. But I really do enjoy when people do reviews/discussion for readers and not other writers. (not every reader actually writes fic on a regular basis, or even at all)

If you have something to say about a fic, post about it. Even if it's old.

yeah i only bring up fics i have a complaint about, because i know that if i rec a fic that i absolutely loved it's going to get criticised, which is fine! but that personally harshes my squee.

Same, but that's mostly because there hasn't really been much that I loved so much that my need to squee can't be satisfied by a kudos and commenting to the author, or a WIP that I want to discuss hypotheses about, or something complex enough to warrant unpacking.

It does feel like lately, maybe the last few months or this season even, there's been less longfic or works posted by "big" writers. I think there's been some great shorter rarepair fic, but nothing is really emerging as the next big thing, aside from Marner/Matthews which hasn't really had any well written long fic yet (that I know of and I'm not really paying too much attention). Maybe if something new takes off like them or Vesey/Skjei, Draisitl/McDavid etc. we'll see more discussion.

I think part of the problem is that the next big thing doesn't have a narrative — Mathews/Marner haven't done anything other than be in the same city at the same time.

But I also think that weirdly, we're in a time when it's harder to write fic. The lockout kept everything stable that year for a longer while in terms of team rosters, etc., which led to a lot of fic being written (including longer fic), which then got read and recced and brought in a lot of new fans the next year.

DA _ Yeah, I don't particularly want to invite something I enjoyed to get stomped. If something bugs me about a fic and it's obviously baby's first fic, or I can see the discussion going onto a topic which is boring I will just stick a comment in venting such as "How have you managed to spell players names wrong in the tags?"

if the fic is mostly good, but has something which could be better or is interesting and I would like to see in a different fic then I might go to fic discussion.

I agree that's a big reason for the drop off in posting. But I don't think it's the only reason.

My point was that often there ISN'T any discussion happening, even if a thread has been created.
