Re: Fandom Goggles
(Anonymous) 2017-04-26 06:37 am (UTC)(link)The Blues old coach was Ken Hitchcock, not Mike (you may be thinking Mike Babcock--multiple cocks = confusion for all).
Pietrangelo is still with the Blues and was named captain last summer after Backes left. He and Parayko also haven't been paired together very often because they're both RHD and Pietrangelo is pretty much always going to be on the top pairing unless he's injured, so it makes sense to have them on different pairings. (As an aside, everyone should definitely write more Petro, since he's a goofball who is way too into fantasy baseball and he does stuff like randomly wearing one of Jake Allen's shirts around because it ended up in his laundry (maybe) and he thought it fit well. Or just didn't notice until Darren Pang pointed it out: http://www.foxsports.com/midwest/video/834547779586)
Parayko was mostly paired with Gunnarsson during his rookie season, and Gunnarsson used to spend a lot of time giving him a run-down about opposing teams and players before games. This article is about Parayko and Gunnarsson, if you haven't seen it already: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/whats-it-like-to-be-a-rookie-when-colton-parayko/
They also paired him with Shattenkirk and Edmundson a decent amount his rookie season. He mostly plays with Edmundson on the 2nd pairing now, and while Edmundson and Fabbri are basically married like you said, they're all pretty cute together. Pictures of Edmundson and Parayko standing next to Fabbri are always pretty amusing, too, given the height difference.
And he's actually 6'5, not 6'4! And may possibly be closer to 6'6ish, if Darren Pang (the Blues color commentator) is to be believed, since he's mentioned it during games. Panger is also prone to exaggeration and 5'5 himself, so he may not be a great judge there. I'm pretty sure everyone looks tall to him.
Major junior isn't actually the same as AAA, or Midget AAA. In Alberta, it would go Midget AA - Midget AAA - Junior A - Major Junior (this is ignoring all the stuff below Midget AA to keep the list from getting too long). Parayko didn't play for a Midget AAA team--in Alberta that would be the AMHL, which is generally where players need to be if they want to move on to the WHL (Major Junior) or the AJHL (Junior A). For players who want to go the Major Junior route to the NHL, they'd usually (not always) play Midget AA, then Midget AAA, then hopefully get drafted into the WHL and either move up to play there or play Junior A for awhile and then move up. There are some players who go the NCAA route who do Midget AA, Midget AAA, Junior A, and then NCAA. Parayko is a pretty neat case, like you pointed out, because he did Midget AA and didn't make Midget AAA, but decided to go ahead and paid to try out for Junior A with the Oil Barons and managed to make it, and then was scouted by the Blues while flying under the radar. There's a pretty good article about it here: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/colton-parayko-became-blues-best-kept-secret/
He also managed to surprise a lot of people when he made the roster out of training camp last year and actually stuck around. He'd only played a few games in the AHL at the end of the previous season and most of the people who followed the team's prospects knew he was good and were pretty hopeful about him, but thought he'd spend at least a year down in the AHL developing a bit more.
So, yeah, he's pretty awesome. And also adorable, super polite (a lot of the players and even the Blues radio and TV announcers have brought up how polite he is--he folds the towels before he hands them back to the trainers on the bench and has been known to help the staff carry bags and equipment in at away games), and not super great about the whole being in front of a camera thing. His episode of Zero to Sixty actually discusses/showcases the last two (plus Patrik Berglund eating--please stop coming to these things with food, Bergie): https://www.nhl.com/blues/video/zero-to-sixty-parayko/t-277437432/c-47567503
Re: Fandom Goggles
(Anonymous) 2017-04-26 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)Petro and Parayko used to play together on the 2nd powerplay unit before the Shattenkirk trade. There were frustrating times when he'd hardly pass to Colton even when he was open. But Colt honestly doesn't shoot enough still so maybe there was a reason for that? (Petro has been promoted to 1st PP now.) The two of them occasionally end up on the ice together in late-game situations too, but the Blues are pretty rigid about having LD-RD pairs out there most of the time.
The team usually calls Parayko 'Pary' and Perron 'Perrs' but it's not that consistent. (In some post-games, Perron gets called Perry too. It drives me nutty.)
And, yeah, Colton Parayko's degree is in business administration!
On the subject of Pietrangelo, I would super love fic about him. He makes the worst dad jokes all the time, which is very much the way to my heart. David Backes used to joke about him never shutting up, but I think that's just Petro's ADD. He's apparently one of the most active guys on the bench during games - always giving feedback to the guys on the ice, like an extra coach.
Re: Fandom Goggles
(Anonymous) 2017-04-26 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)I think I partially blocked out their time together on the power play because it could be pretty frustrating, lol. I really hope that they get him to shoot more next season--it does seem like things have picked up a bit recently, so that's good! And the older guys seem like they've been letting both Colton and Eddy know they should be shooting more and they might possibly both be taking it to heart. The fact that they finally got Colton's stick breaking issues sorted out will hopefully help, too (talk about frustrating, that was the worst).
The world definitely needs more Petro fic where he wins people over with his constant chatter (and generally sunny disposition). Or just Petro and his rookie d-men, since I swear he was more happy when Parayko and Edmundson got their first goals than they were. All the stories about Petro giving guys advice warm the cockles of my heart. He's such a good captain. <3

(Anonymous) 2017-04-26 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)thanks a lot for both the additional links/info and the corrections, especially the clarification on "this isn't ALL the levels of junior hockey but it covers the applicable to parayko ones" (american, did not do my due diligence, oops).
i just watched the pietrangelo vid and was amused. i have a shirt that i never bought and nobody around me's ever claimed so i would *believe* the "oops laundry mishap", but i also like goalie-D ships so i'd be down with the real story being a "yeah, i'm wearing my bf's number and telling the press lies why" situation.
the first thing i thought when reading the article about gunnarson and parayko having "okay, this is what/who you should be looking out for" dinners" and them having their own lingo/parayko saying very nice things about him was something along the lines of "parayko being gunnarson's 'kept rookie' a la addandsubtract's verse". and i'm even more impressed now, because as i understand it, defense is NOT generally one of the positions that rookies (or even second or third-year guys sometimes) shine at just because although there's a learning curve for the Show regardless of position, it's a lot sharper if you play D than if you're a forward.
and yeah, i've heard both the "polite in general" and "helps out staff at times with gear transport/folds towels", and he did *not* look all that comfortable on-camera even in his Zero to Sixty. (which I *really* wish Reaves had been there for although Bergie eating was amusing.)
(presumably different nonnie with added info: thanks for your contributions as well, because i didn't know pretty much any of that and now *i'm* pro-petro fic too.)
Re: Fandom Goggles
(Anonymous) 2017-04-26 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)No problem! Honestly, I follow Junior hockey and have friends who have kids and nieces/nephews playing at lower levels, and I still find it a bit convoluted and confusing sometimes.
I've heard/read lots of comments about the locker room being pretty tight-knit, which I know every team says, but even guys who've done PTOs have said the same things, so it might not entirely be off-base. I wouldn't imagine "whoops, I have no idea how I ended up with this person's shirt, but I'll wear it" is totally far fetched, haha. And Petro and Jake were drafted the same year and have only ever played for the Blues, so fic with them could be a lot of fun! Jake seems fairly laid back when he's not the ice, too, so the personality contrast could be interesting.
I am 100% behind kept rookie fic, too! And yeah, Parayko has basically been one of the best kinds of surprises for fans. He's had some minor struggles, but overall he's pretty put-together for a guy who's only in his second year. Even back in his rookie year, a lot of the other players and media commented a lot on his composure and hockey sense and how good he was at communicating with his teammates and helping direct play.
Re: Fandom Goggles
(Anonymous) 2017-04-27 03:56 am (UTC)(link)i'm always down for personality contrasts (among other things, it's one of the reasons i miss hockey spouses pk/carey so so much.) so petro/jake is interesting me right now, but i am *not* up for the amount of research i'd have to do.
it's not exactly *kept* rookie, but a friend of mine and i now have a whole bunch of not!fic parayko/reaves thanks to whichever nonnie came up with "north american rookies all get tentacles" (basically nc-17 tentacle mentoring 101 turns more serious after parayko's rookie year ends with him using his words that *feelings* got involved. ryan's understandably "ok, mature for your years but still a bb plus neither of us is trade-proof so think about this over the summer/etc." so summer is them doing basically whatever their rl selves did only with some skype/phone sex and keeping in touch included, and they're more-or-less dating in that verse at the moment. we decided that keeping tentacles once you got off your elc was basically a personal decision, and that because of that some guys keep them either a) as an edge to stay on a roster if they're not superstars because NA rookies are a common thing b) it's fun or c) combo platter.)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)BizNasty talked about *his* PTO back in 2016 (where he and Ryan Whitney were basically there to be the "court jesters") and said he seriously wanted the Blues to adopt him/the org was quality. So them having a really tight-knit locker room is backed up by at least one short-timer.
Among other things, Ryan Reaves had Biz and Whitney over for dinner a couple times during their stay in St. Louis. (Biz basically said "yeah, we got paid to fight each other when I was still a Coyote but we're cool on a personal level that was essentially just business", and says nice things about several other Blues.)
The link is about *last* year's playoffs. I have no idea who he's going for in this SCF, although if I had to guess I'd go with the Pens because he was in their org for a while.
