#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

This is the twenty-ninth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

Hmmm, I admit I wasn't 100% clear on Nicky's expulsion-worthy offense. It seemed like he just wanted to scare Durmstrang kids with his non-human magic? And he does briefly hint that people had a problem with him there. But I didn't read it and feel like I needed more about the Durmstrang visitors. I don't think more would be amiss, necessarily, but it wasn't something I needed.

I would have liked a little more about Nicky not personally feeling that it's worth it to be good, or at least finding that noteworthy in Alex. Odd parallel for my brain to make time: I got a little bit of a Nick-Wilde-from-Zootopia vibe, where you might as well be what people think you are. But the story didn't spell it out (haha), especially since the Durmstrang students who showed up were all Nicky's friends and not whoever Alex reminded Nicky of when he first arrived.

Overall, though, I liked the magic school and accidentally giving life to a forest enough to not feel too bereft that Nicky's background mostly comes in hints.

AFAIR, he was expelled for working some sort of school-wide truth spell, which he cast because he wanted to know all the awful opinions of his schoolmates regarding his not-wholly-human status.

I got that it was a truth spell, but I didn't get how Alex's "I would just make them say it" contrasted much with what Nicky did.

The mechanics do seem clearer upon reread, but that's what threw me initially.

I assumed by that that Sasha meant he'd act oblivious like they were the best of friends and take shameless advantage until the others were forced to admit to his face that they were uncomfortable around him, not that he'd do anything magical about the situation.
