LOL the one I always felt personally victimized by was that churchy Avs fic, although I reread it recently and realized it wasn't quite as terrible as I thought it was the first time around. I think it was just that it got recced to high heaven plus people got so touchy and defensive about anyone not liking it, and I'm a contrarian.

Haha I genuinely love that one. I always try to take it in stride when people don't like my recs, though. God knows I've had some stuff recced to me where I was like ????? why would you think I would like this.

Some of the criticisms got really weird, though. I love that fic and recognize that I love it for personal reasons that not everyone is going to share, but just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean it's "tropey," as someone tried to argue on here. Not everything is a trope!

Huh, I would absolutely call it tropey. Not that that's a criticism or the reason I disliked it, but it's 100% a formulaic sexuality crisis/coming out fic, just with more (and more boring) religious veneer than most.

na

I wouldn't categorize it as a formulaic fanfic coming out story. It's too focused on the religious subculture/someone re-examining their relationship to that subculture/one person's personal growth away from their love interest for that.

It's pretty standard "How can this be so wrong when it feels so right????" gayngst, and his personal growth amounts to, "Wait so it's okay to bone my love interest after all!!?". That doesn't make it bad and I get that the religious stuff makes it personally meaningful to people or whatever, but that's it, that's the story.

DA

You can break any story down to its basic themes and dismiss it as, oh, just another one of those. Its impact related to a specific circumstance is exactly what makes or breaks any piece of work.

I'm an atheist who did not grow up in an evangelical environment, so I am not responding from a place of personal meaningfulness. I just disagree that it's a boilerplate fanfic coming out story, because the protagonist's also learning things he didn't know about his parents and re-examining his relationship to the specific subculture in which he was raised and how that shaped him. That is ... not something I associate too much with boilerplate paint-by-numbers coming out/sexuality crisis fanfic.
