(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)I wouldn't categorize it as a formulaic fanfic coming out story. It's too focused on the religious subculture/someone re-examining their relationship to that subculture/one person's personal growth away from their love interest for that.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)You can break any story down to its basic themes and dismiss it as, oh, just another one of those. Its impact related to a specific circumstance is exactly what makes or breaks any piece of work.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)I'm an atheist who did not grow up in an evangelical environment, so I am not responding from a place of personal meaningfulness. I just disagree that it's a boilerplate fanfic coming out story, because the protagonist's also learning things he didn't know about his parents and re-examining his relationship to the specific subculture in which he was raised and how that shaped him. That is ... not something I associate too much with boilerplate paint-by-numbers coming out/sexuality crisis fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-16 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)No, that is definitely true as well.
