Has anyone read that 300k fic?

http://archiveofourown.org/works/10907520/chapters/24251805

I keep seeing it pop up on the tag and I'm so fascinated by the length lol.

Regarding the title, I always thought that if North were South and Brooklyn were Chicago that'd be the perfect song for a Due South vid.

As for the actual fic, the tags make it clear it's not for me, so I haven't read it.

I got a couple chapters in and got distracted by some other bright shiny thing, but if you don't hate a) mpreg in general b) Marner and/or DStrome I'd say it's readable if you're looking for something really long.

It gets a point from me for a) seriously discussing abortion as an option and b) having Dylan being the knocked-up one (I'm pretty sure I would have noped out of pregnant Marner with no plans of returning). There actually is a *little* quasi-science but it's the "mpreg gene" kind (Dylan's dad doesn't have it and RStrome opted for the full gene testing at his combine and came up negative as well, so Dylan didn't bother to get checked when he got drafted beyond the required stuff and doesn't realize "oops I'm knocked up" immediately. I *think* they maybe mentioned that the gene/cluster of genes isn't a required test for privacy-type reasons, but I don't remember for sure.)

Yeah, I also started it but got overwhelmed when saw how far it stretches. I'm almost sad the writing isn't unreadable, because that means my attention span is probably the biggest border between me and finishing this fic. But it's a significant one.

Thank you for this assessment! I usually don't like mpreg or kidfic, but at the same time I'm really desperate for longfic, so I might just give this a chance if it's not unreadable. Let's see how far I make it, lol.

I'm maybe a third of the way through, and it's fine? There's a LOT of banter, which might get old to some. There's also not any specific driving emotional conflict or arc - Mitch and Dylan are already together at the beginning of the fic. I'm having a tough time getting a sense of characterization for anyone besides Connor, who gets a little bit.

I read the fic as it was being posted, and this was my sense too. It's a lot of slice of life, focusing mainly on the #bantz and then later the baby. It was enjoyable, but for a story with 300k words it doesn't have a lot of movement.

I just realized I repeated pretty much everything you said in my comment downthread. Great minds?

I gave it a try even though I don't normally read mpreg, just out of curiosity.

I stayed with it for one of the side pairings, because I love them and they have almost no fic, and was more invested in them than I was in the main story (though the main story wasn't awful by any means!)

Out of curiosity, what's the minor pairing you liked?

RStrome/Tavares.

na

I might have to give it a try just for that.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-19 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt. I thought it might be the case. But to read 300k for a minor pairing? Maybe when I have nothing else to read.

Re: Fic Discussions

(Anonymous) 2017-05-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I got about halfway and realized I was just scrolling through most of it waiting for something to happen. There's so much fucking banter that takes up so many words and none of it is that entertaining to read? It's like listening to your younger siblings bicker with each other or something. I also felt like there was no real conflict happening because everybody ends up being so supportive and wonderful. I never thought I would be like "give me more gritty, realistic mpreg" lol but this fic made me want fic where Dylan gets pregnant and there are actual consequences for his life and career instead of just sunshine and roses and endless banter.

I'm still working my way through, mostly for the scraps of belly-touching and body change stuff, but it is definitely long on fluff. I always want more angst and conflict in this kind of thing, though, as long as it's not "people totally fail to communicate basic facts to one another."

Re: Fic Discussions

(Anonymous) 2017-05-20 03:29 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, angst but not angst like that svmadelyn fic where Toews is the father but takes forever to mention that for reasons that were never clear to me. I know this particular fic isn't supposed to be particularly realistic, but give me a little more than just, every single one of our friends cries when they talk about our baby! your coach let you hang around the team for "support" and everybody was totally cool with it! our agents worked miracles and shut down any Mean Haters that might have been out there and now everything is fine! just a liiittle bit more than that.

especially with 300k

That's one thing I liked about the recent-ish Latta/Wilson mpreg fic. It wasn't a masterpiece, but I thought ot had a pretty decent balance of angst/plot-driving conflict.

+1

I liked that one too especially because I always like woke up in another universe fics where other characters know and the differences between the interloper and their version matter to them.

NA

Anyone have recs for "woke up in another universe" fics? I'm craving it now. All I can think of are:

Jack Johnson/Crosby: http://archiveofourown.org/works/2108985
PK Subban/Carey Price: http://archiveofourown.org/works/2207451

I liked the idea, but in practice I could not buy Latta's characterization at all. His partner has disappeared and might never come back, he's got a guy who looks just like his partner hanging around who isn't in love with him, and meanwhile he's having a baby? Latta was about 1000% too chill for that scenario, as far as I was concerned.

OP

I've given it a try when people said it isn't terrible and it isn't really, but I'm only on chapter 6 or so and ALREADY annoyed by all the banter, lol. If it just continues like that I'm not sure I can read it all even though I do long for longfic.

Re: Fic Discussions

(Anonymous) 2017-05-20 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're already getting banter overload, then I will be very surprised if you make it through the whole fic. But you should keep us updated, because I'm curious!

Re: Fic Discussions

(Anonymous) 2017-05-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
There is so much crying in this fic. And facewashing. (As in "X gave Y a face wash," not a weird dedication to hygiene.) And omg, "Would husband again" is not a phrase that needs to appear more than once per fic.

Re: Fic Discussions

I'm late on this, but I liked it a lot right up until the baby was born. Then it got too repetitive for me, but I finished it.

Side note: this fic made me look up Mitch Marner's brother on instagram and it was a Good Decision.
