Nah, hockey fans have short memories. If Nashville is conveniently promoting a rapist on its NHL team at the time, then sure. (Always a possibility in men's pro sports!)

It's more like selective memory; if someone's fave fuck up, it gets swept away within the week. If they're looking for a reason to hate a team, shit from a decade ago can and does get dredged back up.

I don't think that's 100% true. I've personally really, really deeply liked some players that I then found out sexually assaulted someone; it was deeply uncomfortable, but I stopped liking them. And I haven't seen anyone cheering for Zolnierczyk.

Slightly off topic from what you were saying, but it's hilarious to me as a Pens fan seeing a newish fan bring up Zolnierczyk as a reason the Preds as an org are terrible and you aren't allowed to like them. Guess you never read back far enough on Wikipedia to see who was playing for the Pens in 2013...

In the few hours since the Preds clinched the west I've seen multiple Pens fans who were 100% on the Preds bandwagon suddenly start caring a lot about Harry Z/Ribeiro and talking about they could neeeever root for the Preds because of that. It's so transparent and it drives me crazy. You either care or you don't!!! I know most of us in this fandom choose to ignore certain unsavory aspects of our favorite teams or the NHL in general but don't be totally fine with it one minute and find it morally abhorrent the next!!

I'm confused as to what you are accusing these fans of, exactly. What exactly is transparent, here, if they had been rooting for the team before this?

not-ayrt

Transparently motivated by rooting interest. They're Pens fans, they're no longer rooting for the Preds because that's who the Pens will face if they beat Ottawa. This is exactly why I'm hopping off their bandwagon too but I'm not pretending Ribeiro and Zolnierczyk (who played for the Pens relatively recently lol) have anything to do with it.

Gross. :( I wanted the Preds to get to the final because if the Pens couldn't win it, the Preds would be my second choice. I assumed that was other people's reasoning, too!

They transparently only care about the bad shit Ribeiro did when he might face their team in the SCF. Before that it was a-ok.

Amazing but unsurprising. I hadn't seen what you described yet but as soon as I read your comment I checked out the twitter feed of the Most Woke Pens Fan and... yep, there it is.

Really, Pens fans are not people who should try to go too far in the sex-crimes event at the moral purity Olympics. I'm not saying any NHL team would look great under that microscope. But no one wants a debate on why one sex crime wasn't as bad as some other sex crime where opinions are determined by rooting interest, so maybe don't go too far down that road?

DA

With Harry Z occasionally you'll get someone talking about him finally making the NHL or other hockey related stuff, but I think for the most part it helps that he's just an injury replacement call-up who isn't very good. Easy at least as a fan of the team to disassociate somewhat and only feel actively shitty if he scores or if a player you like takes a pictures with him. It still sucks though that the culture won't weed out these people.

Don't make my eyes roll out of my head. Like memories aren't conveniently shorter in some cases than others. The Preds signed Ribeiro barely a month before the Kane allegations. The only reason they aren't currently promoting him is because he's not good at hockey anymore. If Kane had dropped off the face of the earth at the same time as Ribeiro got demoted, I doubt anyone would have done a 180 on their feelings about the Hawks. I hate the Hawks and like the Preds (mostly Subban tbh) but come on.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-05-23 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Of course no one would have done a 180; once feelings are entrenched, good luck turning that ship around. But also if Kane was significantly lower profile in the team itself, I think you'd see less backlash to begin with against the team as an entity. The backlash against the Hawks had a lot of factors; a certain "scandal critical mass," a large and active defense of Kane, the perception of Kane as a face of the team and thus inextricable from it, and, yes, greater fame and profile meaning that everyone focused on them more. Of course the Preds would be promoting Ribeiro if he was still good, but the fact that he isn't and thus they aren't means that fans don't have the same perception of Ribeiro as a face of the team.

IDK, I got into hockey by bandwagoning the Hawks. When the Kane allegations broke, I was a fan. But I genuinely did find it disgusting and it did change my mind about the team, not because I was sick of their success but because the way they handled it made me sick of them, period. Of course people have self-serving memories and form opinions based on team bias, but claiming that that's all the backlash was is something I'm really skeptical about.

2 Ribiero things.

1. I'll never forgive David Poile for what he said after the Preds signed him.
2. As someone who read the Ribiero court docs (FYI. This was a poor decision, if you do it let this be your warning. It was somehow even worse than I had expected) - the list of shit that he did - to a CHILD - while his children were in the same room and the fact that his wife was complacent to it is absolutely horrifying.

I wish twitter had a note feature like Reddit so I could remember why I blocked that person.

I, being a deeply petty person, actually have a little .txt file where I keep notes on why I blocked people, and that's also where I keep my list of people I'm going to unfollow on Tumblr a couple weeks in the future so they can't make annoying vagueblogging posts about how [x] number of people unfollowed them for whatever shitty opinion they just posted. Probably you should not be like me.

This actually sounds like a *good* idea to me, but I have some pretty significant memory issues (TBIs suck, what can I say?) so I would *totally* forget why I blocked people if I a) actually had any real namespace presence and b) did it for reasons beyond "porn bot" or a couple of PKane stans back when.
