Did you see the tweets from freckledbutt and her friends about it? Holy shit, I've never seen such pigheaded and unselfaware privilege on display.

"Tickets are $70? That's reasonable for a casual fan?" and then homenotahotel kept doubling down on that! Then she bragged about how she spent $800 to see the Pens play in San Jose, which makes her a True Fan, unlike all those slacker Sens fans that can't afford $70.

These threads are incredible:

I get piling on the media for being two-faced in their attendance narratives, but I don't understand being like this to other fans especially when Ottawa has a bunch of shit going on with govt workers not getting paid. Like, have a heart? Sports are not that important.

I didn't realize civil servants still weren't getting paid because of the Phoenix mess, how do you fuck up a system implementation that hard.

This is soooo ironic coming from people who pride themselves on being "woke" and get mad at people who try to police new/bandwagon fans. How do you tweet that and not realize your argument is literally "Ottawa fans should try not being poor. My example of how easy it is to not be poor is my friend who spends all of her disposable income on hockey fandom and doesn't have a family to support. Shame on you if you don't do the same!!"

That quote tweet they were replying to really nailed it IMO. This is a person (freckledbutt) who started a gofundme for her broken down car, didn't make the goal, fixed the car anyway and bought/bragged about concert tickets/Comicon passes/going to multiple Penguins playoffs games. She is completely vile on this front and should not be judging other people's financial capabilities.

Don't forget, moved across the country to Pittsburgh to be "closer to hockey" and doesn't appear to have found a job there.

In general NHL ticket prices are insane to me and if I was a hockey fan in a city like Toronto I could probably never even go to a game. Even if they get mocked, being a fan of a team with cheap prices seems much better lol. Maybe I just don't get it tho bc hockey here in Europe is very different.

To me, reasonable tickets (regular season: I've yet to attend a PO game) are $30 and under, and I'm aware enough to know that still might not be feasible for everyone. And that trying to get that price for some teams is a case of ahahahahaha good luck. I've spent more than that before, but that's my line between "reasonable" and "this is a fairly pricey hobby."

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I live in a market/support a team where I can get tickets for $30 or less for nearly every home game and realize how lucky I am. I might buy higher priced tickets as a Christmas or birthday gift (or as a present to myself, once, for making it through a hellish semester) but some people spend what I pah in rent each month for hockey tickets. It's insane to me.

I moved quite a distance from my hometown, where tickets are usually going to be more than that unless you're friends with a STH, but I can see non-rival teams play the local team for that price most of the time. And I can see my hometown team visit for that as long as I order tickets far enough ahead of time. I think the cheapest I've gotten were $19, but I've seen tickets for as low as $15 on occasion. When I've paid more than $30, it's been a special occasion/special treat thing. I also don't go that often, which also makes a difference. I think my logic is "this is no more than twice the cost of seeing a movie in a theater, and it's a live entertainment product."

I could see wanting to be a STH if you had the income and planned on re-selling tickets/the bulk price was worth it for the number of games you wanted to see. But I just don't have it in me to drop $70 on a regular basis. If you're a single person, that's probably more than a week of food.

I live in an expensive market, and paid $100 to see a game with my friend for her birthday (which happens to be New Year's Eve, which added to the cost). But that was a once a year experience for me and I would never accuse other people of being bad fans for not wanting to pay that. Regardless, deciding a certain ticket price isn't that bad because you and your friends have paid more to go to games is ridiculous.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think $70 for a playoffs game is a reasonable price, but reasonable =/= anyone could afford it and Senators fans have no excuse to not go to the games at that price.

I managed to get Canucks tickets for $40 CAD each, ~$60 after fees and taxes. Cheap, but they were Tuesday evening resale tickets against the Red Wings. Definitely a once a season thing-- I can't drop that kind of cash with any regularity. I sort of hope we stay terrible next year so I can maybe afford to go again.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I also don't know where they are getting that $70 figure. All the media sources I've seen have said the cheapest unsold tickets were $120 Canadian, which would be $88 or so American.

What's so incredible to me (besides the obvious that people have pointed out) is their reaction to being called out? Like, if they had an ounce of self-awareness they're realize by now what they said was shitty and gracefully back down, but like... the reactions... "you don't know me!" "if you disagree with her you shouldn't have RT'd her!!" "ok I'll never express an opinion again!" "if you want to talk shit about someone you must do it to their face or in a private account"... coming from people who routinely engage in abrasive direct and indirect call-outs of people they don't know?? If freckledbutt had to follow those guidelines herself she'd never be allowed to tweet.

How hard it is to just say, "I didn't think about the implications of what I was saying, I didn't mean to shame poor people," jfc. I guess this isn't really surprising especially considering who we're dealing with but c'mon, not even the rest of your friends are with you on this one. Watching homenotahotel go "well if you had *actually* asked me instead of attacking me you would have known that what I'm *really* criticizing is the organization not the fans!!!"... ok, and that has what to do with your bragging about blowing $800 to see the Pens in SJ?

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She responded and chose to only address the $800 seats thing, not the fact that people were mad that she thinks there's "no excuse" for not spending $70 on a single ticket. Once again the people who are most likely to squawk about anybody else being problematic have no self awareness, what a surprise!

Not surprising, you're right, but mind-boggling all the same. I can see someone so lacking in self-awareness letting their team loyalty get the better of them and lead them into stupidity... but when numerous people who are 1) Pens fans and 2) your friends/mutuals are openly aghast at your behavior... how can that not even give you a moment's pause??

Also, love freckledbutt responding to silent_parts with "you don't know me!!" (i.e., exactly what silent_parts pointed out which she is somehow objecting to??) and then immediately following up with "how many times will i cry today?"... be more white feminist, I dare you.

freckledbutt complaining that people are talking shit about her financials is hilarious.

yeah, your finances and what you do with your resources is your own damn business, which is why you and your friends shouldn't go on a public forum and bring up how much money you've spent on a team as a benchmark for fan investment.

She'd rather believe that people are personally attacking her rather than consider the valid criticism they are making... waaaaaaahhh...

Are there normal, funny Pens fans in tumblr space because it's either freckledbutt and her sycophants or oflights and her sycophants, and then gerbil girl. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND help me, I want to enjoy this cup run.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly probably not. I could be wrong as I almost never am on tumblr anymore, but then, there's a reason for that. Twitter has been better for a while, but I feel like all the Pens fans I really like and respect have also started retreating from following/talking about hockey (partly bc of the people you mentioned lol).

I like puckducky, tuisinthekowhai, itstartledme (also posts a lot of Flyers stuff), theladyscribe... A trick that might help is to click on a post you like and look at the tags people have reblogged it with, and try out the people whose tags are chatty and not obnoxious.

tbh I get most of my Pens fandom interaction via locked Twitters, though.

You might also try Pensburgh. The commenting community there is pretty fun, and really obnoxious opinions (re: rape, race discussions, etc) usually get dogpiled pretty fast.
