I wasn't a big fan of the last half, tbh. I love sevenfists' writing generally and thought the story was very well done, but it already felt like literally every Sid/Geno, coming out, Russia sucks, etc. story ever written, to the point that I kept seriously wondering whether I'd read it somewhere before. The last half then sort of petered out into a bunch of repetitive coming out scenes and also hit my pet peeves and the deja vu moments even harder. I mean it's still miles better than practically everything in the tag these days and I'm being very nitpicky, but yeah.

This comment is what I thought. I also liked the last half less, starting with the part OP had a complaint with. That mini-conflict didn't feel reasonable or necessary to me, especially since it was resolved so pat-ly so the narrative could move on to the actual main conflict.

I did really like the first half and some of the language in it - the part where Geno says he's a bear, that part with the mouth of the Stanley cup and caviar, the whole sequence leading up to Geno comparing himself to a toadstool, etc. The second half I powered through; it wasn't bad and I wanted resolution. I would still rec finishing because what else is there to read.
