I, for the record, would be ecstatic to read all the noir a/b/o murder mystery AUs anyone cares to write. Or the cozy a/b/o murder mysteries, for that matter.
Of course noir does depend heavily on ideas of gender - as do a lot of genres, really, don't they? It's just that m/f gender is so deeply culturally embedded that it doesn't stick out, and in a/b/o it does because we're not used to them?
