Re: Fic recs
From: (Anonymous)I think maybe the ayrt's point is more than a/b/o is a trope about gender. Like, yes, you could probably write an a/b/o fic where the a/b/o is incidental to the story of, say, staging a musical or solving a murder mystery, but most people understand a/b/o to be speculative fic about gender and sex. Even when people talk about playing the trope straight, they talk about applying some ideas that would be problematic applied to RL women to male omegas instead.
Even with that, I think you're mischaracterizing ~subversive a/b/o when you suggest it's all about self-hating omegas. I think it's more omegas vs. society than internalized omegaphobia, though both exist.
Re: Fic recs
From: (Anonymous)I, for the record, would be ecstatic to read all the noir a/b/o murder mystery AUs anyone cares to write. Or the cozy a/b/o murder mysteries, for that matter.
Of course noir does depend heavily on ideas of gender - as do a lot of genres, really, don't they? It's just that m/f gender is so deeply culturally embedded that it doesn't stick out, and in a/b/o it does because we're not used to them?
Re: Fic recs
From: (Anonymous)Well, I never said noir. And I am deeply offended that you didn't respond about the musical option. Don't you want to hear an all-alpha musical troupe singing "It's a Hard Knot Life (For Us)"?
I would say that noir is a genre with established gender roles, so messing with them at all stands out to people familiar with the genre. People would notice an inversion with a female detective, too.
Re: Fic recs
From: (Anonymous)Well, that was just an example. Honestly I would read the heck out of just about any genre + a/b/o mash-up. Psychological horror? Thriller? Comedy of manners? And also, yeah, any kind of murder mystery, because of how much those depend on thinking about other people's psychology and social conditioning.
And also, yes, musicals. You betcha. :D
