From: (Anonymous)Shattenkirk was born in Greenwich and lived there for awhile when he was a kid, and Atkinson is from that general area. They were both part of the US national team development program, so they were on the same team for awhile and knew each other as kids. One of the commentators also mentioned during the Blues/Blue Jackets final game this year that they still train together in the off-season. I haven't seen anything about this elsewhere, but Shattenkirk goes home in the off season and I assumed Atkinson probably does, too, so it would make sense. Shattenkirk also attended a fundraiser that Atkinson was having a few years back. And there is also the playing for rival Boston-area colleges thing, too, which is pretty great. I would love to see college-era fic (or fic that spans their beginnings in hockey to present-day), but there's aren't a lot of interviews or articles that I've been able to dig up on them as kids. Most of what I've heard is via commentators mentioning it during games. And there isn't a ton of Blues and Blue Jackets fic to begin with, so it's probably just a pipe dream, but I just love that whole idea of growing up hockey together.
