Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)I didn't say plenty of them definitely had. I'm saying I wouldn't be surprised if plenty of them had. There's a wide range of behaviours I would be willing to accept as normal.
On the other hand, I would be surprised if many NHL players had a problem with people casually smoking weed. I don't do drugs but socialising in a fairly diverse range, the only people I've ever heard object to drugs around them were current police officers. (And I can think of at least two of them who smoked before or after their police employment.) Is that really a common attitude?
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)As for weed, (still in my experience) they might not care as much if non-teammates were doing it well away from them, but when it was teammates or people around them, yeah, it became an issue. I mean, they did plenty of stupid shit that going wrong could affect their careers (like skateboarding behind cars), but there were potentially more ramifications for everyone if a guy got caught doing drugs.
I can't say if it's an overall common attitude, but I generally know more people who object to drugs, including weed but not alcohol and split on (smoke-producing) tobacco, than not.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)IKR. This is easily, easily the most conservative conversation I've ever seen about pot, and I've never taken a non-prescription drug (mostly because I'm asthmatic and the smoking drugs bother me physically). But I don't give a shit about adults doing pot from time to time and I don't think a majority of adults do either. Portraying NHL players as stick-up-their-ass conservatives about a casual drug like pot seems about as realistic to me as portraying one who uses a phrase like check your privilege. (I suppose I could except some players known to be really, really religious.)
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)We've literally had this conversation on meme before. Saying that people who'd rather not read about athletes doing drugs or have personal experience with athletes who won't do them because it affects their play, is not at all the same as portraying them as stick in the mud conservatives.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)I guess I've forgotten it. Anyway, I didn't say people should force themselves to read about it. I'm talking about the nonnie who's saying that she thinks that athletes would be far more likely to disapprove of recreational drugs being done around them. That seems very unlikely.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)huh, maybe it depends on sport, because the d1 baseball players i know at my university can't care less. mostly they don't smoke during the season-- though a lot of drinking-- but during the offseason, oh yeah.

From: (Anonymous)Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Honestly, if my personal experiences with athletes have shown me anything, it's that they're not doing pot because they're too busy doing cocaine.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)i'd like to see cocaine and dip/chew in fic more, mostly because it seems like it's known that a lot of nhl players do those things but it never appears in fic. or maybe it does and i haven't read the right pieces.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)yeah, that seems to be pretty much the general consensus among writers, lol.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)The first time I saw peers use chewing tobacco was at a baseball game. It's not super disgusting? Since they just keep a wad of it tucked between their bottom teeth and inner lip. The only gross thing is how much they spit. Since we were in a stadium, the guys would spit into plastic water bottles and the color is like coffee brown. Why anyone would want to do it is beyond me, especially since baseball players have died from using it.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)I've written so many drugs into fic, but I've NEVER written dip into anything. I know people who use it too and have a really good perception of how. It's just gross and unsexy as far as I'm concerned. Other than the off mention of spitting something, I don't know how I'd work it in anywhere that wouldn't make me gag.
I'd rather write in bathroom visits than that.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)I find dip significantly more gross than cigarettes, and I don't think that's unusual. The drug is the same, the gross bit is the spitting everywhere and having that shit just hanging out in your mouth ruining your teeth/tongue/ick. Also, yeah, I do think "disgusting" is a pretty next-level word to use for marijuana consumption.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Sure? What does that have to do with the comment I left? I was talking about dip/chew specifically because that's something we have proof a lot of the people we write about do, in fact, actually do in real life. So not writing them using it is actually ignoring part of "canon".
Not writing them doing whatever other drugs is not ignoring something we know for a fact they do, unless you're writing fic about, say, Jarret Stoll.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were implying that you do write about recreational drug use but not dip. Lots of people write about marijuana use (which we have no proof of) and no one as far as I know has written about dip. Both habits are equally disgusting imo.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)Would you hit the back button if dip were in use during a fic? Anyone can answer, I am curious.
Re: Fic Discussion!
From: (Anonymous)I probably would bc a family member got cancer from dipping and it's just not something I want to read about.
