Re: Fic Discussion!

Not sending him to World Juniors seemed really odd to me, unless he told them he didn't want to go.

From all the discussion about it, it almost seemed like he didn't want to go and they kept him up/sent him down so that he didn't have to go? Which struck me as very strange.

That at least makes some sense even if it's not something every player does. Germany's not very good so I can get not wanting to go and get blown out every game.

They got a huge amount of criticism for not sending him to world juniors because they supposedly needed him so badly, and then sending him back to his junior team once it was too late for him to play in the WJC. It was at that point there were some claims he didn't want to go, but I don't think they're very credible. I'm sure he wanted to stay in the NHL, but given the choice between the Kelowna Rockets (which he'd been traded to and never played on) and Team Germany, somehow I think he would have been fine with going to the WJC.

That's what I remember. But am I misremembering the Capitals getting similar criticism for calling someone up from the AHL and then scratching him, when his national team wanted him too?

I hope my team doesn't have to deal with those kind of shenanigans next season, but it's pretty likely we will. Yay.

Yeah, that was Burakovsky. I guess it's just business, but I didn't think it was handled very well.

The Swedish hockey fed was pissed. http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2014/12/19/angry-swedish-hockey-federation-claims-andre-burakovsky-demotion-available-for-wjc/

But here's a cute older Burra interview. Awwww. http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2013/07/13/andre-burakovsky-on-tom-wilson-he-learned-me-a-lot-of-things-like-eating-peanut-butter/

I'm trying to remember who was the other Caps guy/prospect that the mgmt kept calling up and sending down so as to not to tip them over X number of appearances and trigger an ELC/payout/etc - I forget the exact details. Or was the Burakovsky too? Help me out, Caps nonnies.

Not terribly familiar with the Caps, but I think it was a defenseman. Maybe Orlov?

Yeah, that was Orlov last season.

To add some additional context, Orlov's contract specified that he had to play a certain number or NHL games or he could go back to the KHL. The Caps kept calling him up and sending him down because GMGM didn't want to lose his rights and Oates didn't want to play him.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capitals-insider/wp/2013/11/26/why-the-capitals-keep-recalling-but-dont-play-dmitry-orlov/

In other news, trying to find that article led me to the RMNB article on why Oates needed to go, and it's pretty funny that Trotz did some of the same things on the list. I mean, Trotz >>>>>>>> Oates and it's not even close. It's just funny.

Trotz, as much of an improvement as he is over complete insanity, is definitely not a perfect coach. I have been enjoying the confused swing of opinions regarding the benchings, though.

Of course he's not perfect. It seems like a lot of coach's share some of his particular quirks, though, like being head over heels for veteran grittership. The things both he and Oates did include playing goalies back-to-back (a tired Holtby is still better than Peters), playing Beags with Ovi (sigh), and assigning Nate Schmidt to Hershey (he'll be with the Caps next year). There was something else too. I know everyone hated Oates changing the lines all the time but it wasn't on the list of reasons he should be fired.

Re: Fic Discussion!

Playing Beagle on the top line is classic Trotz, he likes pairing more skilled players with grit players to try to shore up the line defensively, but with him you know he has some sort of logic (as it is) instead of throwing darts at a roster.

At least he didn't play Beagle over Backstrom as 1C. For months. Yeah, that happened under Oates. I don't think Beagle ever belongs on the top line, but Trotz was not as bad as Oates, even when it came to "Beagle time all the time." That said, Wardo was more productive when he was moved into the top 6.

Anon who asked

Right! I couldn't remember good enough search terms to bring it up, and I'd forgotten about the KHL provision. Bad situation.

Trotz isn't perfect, but such an improvement, both in coaching and the fact that the team seems to have a more positive culture this year. Bailamos!
