I haven't read this story, but I don't think you could ever count on first pairing being main. I see a lot of authors tagging chronologically, for example, so last pairing is endgame. There doesn't seem to be much of a concensus.

I just really hate off-screen/background pairings being tagged at all, and I wish people would put that stuff in the notes, if they really think it's necessary to warn people.

Agreed. AO3 doesn't have any guidelines when a writer goes to post something, so it's hard to know what to do.
