I thought they were using "American" to mean "from the Americas", particularly North America? Could be wrong though.

As is Canada? Which, since there are very few Latinos-From-Mexico in the NHL, encompasses "North America" for the NHL's purposes.

As is Canada what? I specifically mentioned the U.S. in my reply. People above me also specifically said the U.S. If the person who replied to me was speaking about North America in general, they were shifting from what I said, just like they did when they moved the conversation from general culture to hockey culture, which I clearly wasn't talking about.
