Re: Warnings/author's note advice?

From: (Anonymous)
Based on comments I have received on my own fic and comments I have seen left on other people's fics, I don't think it's a stretch as an example of how something serves a storytelling reason in a fic but can be misinterpreted as being reflective of an author's world-view, however briefly.

My point was that author's notes can be a good idea, if you worry readers might misinterpret, even when it should be obvious upon reflection that the author is not being offensive.

I think author's notes have their place, but that is a horrible example to illustrate that, as it says more about the reader than the author if they assume every time a black character eats any type of chicken that the author is unconsciously including some sort of racist worldview.

Precisely.

The racial stereotype is very much fried-chicken-specific. Grilled chicken is super generic hockey player food and it's weird to me that someone's mind would go there.

I'm still stuck on them having to go to a sketchy restaurant somewhere because they want grilled chicken. You can get that at any chain restaurant, come on!

The only thing I can think of is that it was a specific type of grilling method which is why they had to go to a sketchy restaurant.
