It's hard because IRL I don't like cocky assholes, but in fiction/following a celebrity it was kind of a fun fantasy, you know? Because you don't actually have to deal with them. And then I think about pics I've seen of him smiling at 16 or 18 and think, yeah, that little shit totally thought he was entitled to anything and everything. Most athletes have to have unshakeable confidence in themselves to do what they do and weather criticism, slumps, etc, but you have to wonder when and how often that gets twisted into confidence that they also deserve whatever they want.

(Like that serial killer Toews fic, which I could never reread because I found it all too horrifyingly plausible. That combo of determination and entitlement just felt too recognizable and too easily tipped over to something awful.)
