I think the best way to describe it is "Patrick Kane" was the most popular fandom creation. Because I came in through reading fic, and when I started trying to get to know the real guys better the actual Kane seemed pretty different than who I'd been reading about. But between the early media image presented and his appearance, fandom made up this sensitive but confident party boy character you could use in a lot of scenarios, including as a third party in other fic.

At the same time though, he was also one of the most disliked fandom creations, from people who didn't ship K/T. I don't know that any of the other popular characters inspired dislike/hate on that level as opposed to just indifference. Fandom!Kane put me off K/T fic before I found out about RL!Kane's problems, and I know other people had the same experience.
