Connor McDavid primer: http://thistidalwave.tumblr.com/post/122051346295/connor-mcdavid-a-primer/mobile

And there's this story on reddit:

Obviously McJesus hype has been real all year- so when we realized when the Erie Otters were visiting Kingston me and alot of buddies wanted to go. We're all in our first year at Queen's University, with most of us coming from Toronto. My friend organized tickets for a big group of us (around 40 or 50) to go to the game and sit together. Also, a few of us are good friends with one of his ex girlfriends. We were sitting in the Kingston end, and we planned to chant her name-- let's call her Caroline whenever he got close to us. So whenever McDavid was in the offensive zone, or had the puck, there was about 50-mostly drunk- teenagers screaming "CAAAROLINE...CARRROLINE." He caught on right away as it was so loud. He was held pointless, and during the intermission I was taking a snapchat video of us yelling at him as they entered the changeroom and he stopped at looked at me for about 3 seconds with the dirtiest look I've ever seen. Other guys, mainly Strome, thought it was hilarious.

ok he's pretty cute with that dylan strome kid

I'm wondering who he'll end up being shipped with the most in the oilers though

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

From: (Anonymous)
I'm kind of rooting for Darnell Nurse, because meme has linked cute pics of them before. I could also go for Nail Yakupov. DNW Ference as anything but a platonic mentor, no clue why.

I'd read him with Hallsy/Ebs/RNH in pretty much any combination but I don't actively *ship* it.

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

From: (Anonymous)
I feel like Ference has reached Dad status to all these kids (also, he's possibly too married? Both to Krista and Bergy. I'll never let it go) - I can't remember which part of the Oilers documentary it was where he herded them all through a supermarket. From that point on I just couldn't imagine shipping him with anyone in that team. I'm not into big age gaps either.

I could get behind Nurse/McDavid...

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

From: (Anonymous)
I'm hoping for him/Darnell Nurse/Leon Draisatl as a new Oilers OT3 setup. He and Nurse had a pretty intense playoff series against each other and then went in very short order to being teammates and their interactions are cute. Nurse and Draisatl poke fun at each other all the time in instagram comments and so I kind of ship them as is. And then you have McDavid and Draisatl, which is probably more of a complicated relationship, since Drai has become... sort of expendable with the lottery win unless he becomes a winger and so they're more in competition. But you do see the three of them going off with just each other at prospect events (like the one where they were watching the new stadium being built and were all dressed up in construction gear, the three of them were a couple of rows back from everyone else talking to one another) so it may not be too contentious.

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

From: (Anonymous)
Why does he have to be shipped with someone on the Oilers? Aren't his most popular pairings Eichel or Strome?

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

From: (Anonymous)
ayrt

He doesn't have to be shipped with someone on the Oilers but given how big he's probably gonna be in the future, I won't be surprised if he'll eventually be shipped with someone on his team. McDavid has that fandom bicycle-potential.

Someone tell me more about Draisaitl, please? All I know is that he has some sick flow when we did that hair thread.

Re: 30-in-30: Edmonton Oilers

(The first article was translated by Google Translate.)

2009, the 16-year-old opted for a change of the youth of the Kölner Haie to the Adler Mannheim, a first step to stand on his own feet. "In Cologne, the situation was difficult. As you get the best education in Mannheim, the decision was easy," says Draisaitl.

It was a decision that forced him to stand on his own two feet, as he admits in the "Mannheimer Morgen": "In the past always have mom and dad all done for me, now I have to take it himself in the hand." But, and this emphasizes Leon Draisaitl, it was a decision that he felled without his father: "When I had the chance to go to Mannheim, he told me to decide."
/
And even outside the sports field, he has now settled. He attended the comprehensive school in Mannheim and feels fit as a fiddle in the team. "The guys are great!" Says Draisaitl.

In Dominik Kahun he has already found a good friend: "Even in the last season I was with Dominik in a line, then usually in the student league. We get along very well."
/
The great idol of the young eagle is Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings, also a left shooter. "Pavel Datsyuk is for me like a god. He does on the ice so many extraordinary things," Draisaitl raves about the Russians - while the Canadian Press in conjunction with its impressive statistics already speaks of "Gretzky-like numbers".

He said it was a bit of an adjustment coming to Prince Albert from Koln, Germany.

"I was used to a lot of traffic and people in Germany," Draisaitl said. "Prince Albert is small and everything is tight together, so it was an adjustment for me. But I've gotten used to it and am really happy here."

The dangler from Deutschland even got a special visit from his mother Sandra and his sister Kim, both of whom came all the way from Germany to see him.

Before the game, all the Raiders presented roses to their mothers or billet mothers to celebrate the Raiders Annual Parent/Billet Weekend. As Leon was skating up to present his rose, Sandra jumped up and down in excitement before giving her son a long and warm embrace.

After the game, Draisaitl said having two familiar faces in the crowd watching him gave him a nice, easy feeling heading into the game.

“I felt way more comfortable because my mom’s out here with my sister together,” said Draisaitl, now third in WHL rookie scoring with 11 points. “It always gives you the feeling that your family is here and you’re more comfortable.”

German 2014 NHL Draft prospect Leon Draisaitl is familiar with the Czech language as well, although not ready to take questions in Czech. His father Peter, of Czech decent, is the first German to ever coach in the Czech Extraliga, where he is currently running the bench for Cesky Budejovice.
/
His English is already quite good, but something he didn’t just learn in school and then improve on in Canada. Indeed, he was already exposed to it extensively in DEL locker rooms when he was a child and while hanging out with his father’s various teams.

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/83225/notes-and-quotes-from-the-preliminary-round-of-the-2013-world-juniors/ (January 1st, 2013)

Still, he was happy to get back to his Canadian home and Raider billet Carol Ring, along with his roommate/teammate Shane Danyluk.

“I really missed them both,” he says. “Carol and Dany, it was nice to see them.”

He wasn’t entirely without familiar faces in Ufa, Russia however.

Draisaitl says it was weird to play against his linemate and friend Mark McNeill, who suited up for Canada.

“When I first saw him at the warmup I just started to laugh,” he says with a wide grin. “It was so weird to play against my linemate. To see him in another colour of jersey playing for his country it was really funny.”

Draisaitl chuckles when he said he tried to hit McNeill once during the game but missed. The two had a brief chat after the game, which Canada won 9-3.

Draisaitl also has some buddies to play with during the tournament.

The German team had six CHL players on it, many of whom Draisaitl had played with before. One of his German linemates was a former teammate, Dominik Kahun, who now plays for the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League.

Draisaitl’s father, Peter, was born in what is now the Czech Republic, but he played and coached nearly 30 years of professional hockey in Germany. Leon was born in Koln, Germany, and played his way up through the German youth ranks before moving to North America last fall. He began playing with an Under-16 team when he was just twelve years old, and the Under-18 squad at fifteen. A year ago, and still only sixteen years old, Draisaitl played for the German national team at the U-18 World Junior Championship, and he is set to do so again in a few days (he got a long look with the German men’s team for the upcoming World Championships, but failed to make the cut). More impressive, however, was the 17-year-old sensation’s play for the Germans during the most recent U-20 World Junior Championship. Not only was he the youngest player on the roster, but Draisaitl also led all Germans in scoring for the tournament with six points in six games.
/
When asked about what Draisaitl is like in the locker room, Coach Young praised the forward’s work ethic and leadership abilities.

“He’s a fan favorite. He generated a lot of attention and he handled everything extremely well. He still has a lot of growing to do and maturing, but he is definitely a candidate for wearing a letter next year.”

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/88765/beyond-tomorrow-draisaitl-makes-a-solid-first-impression/ (April 15th, 2013)

Danyluk, along with his billet Carol Ring, had the responsibility last fall of making young German star Leon Draisaitl feel at home after his move to Canada.

It evidently worked. Draisaitl gushes about his roommate.

“Shane is just a great guy. He’s a phenomenal kid. He’s just nice,” Draisaitl says. “Everybody loves him in the dressing room. He just works so tremendously hard. I’ve never seen him play a bad game. He just works every shift. I just love him; he’s a great kid.”

http://www.paherald.sk.ca/Sports/Hockey/2013-08-28/article-3367865/Hard-working-Danyluk (August 28, 2013)

“I am proud,” Sandra Draisaitl said, visiting Prince Albert from Germany this week. “I see a little bit of his father, they play typically the same style.”
/
In addition to watching Leon and the Raiders take on the Regina Pats and the Medicine Hat Tigers this week, Sandra and her daughter Kim had the chance to experience all Prince Albert has to offer including the Prince Albert National Park, with Leon’s billet, Carol Ring.

Sandra said getting to know Ring is important in “letting go” of Leon, as he takes residence halfway across the world.

“Last year we met her (Carol), she is very nice and I am happy she is Leon’s billet,” Sandra said.

Ring is one of Prince Albert’s most prestigious billets, having housed the likes of Raiders alumni Mike Modano and Dean McAmmond.

“For me as a mother, it’s good to know her and know who Leon is living with. As a mother I can let him go because I know her,” Sandra said.

Prince Albert Raiders centre Leon Draisaitl is excited to reunite with his German brethren as he departs for World Junior Championship selection camp on Saturday.

Draisaitl said he is eager to hit the ice with his buddies; forwards Frederik Tiffels, Dominik Kahun and backstop Marvin Cupper, who have all been named to Germany’s selection camp roster.

For the second-straight tournament, Draisaitl will face off against a Raiders teammate against Canada.

Last year, it was Mark McNeill. This year, it’s defenceman Josh Morrissey.

Draisaitl and Morrissey bumped into each other at a Swedish hotel on Christmas Eve and exchanged a few words.

The conversation was brief. Morrissey said he’ll save his talking for the ice.

“It’s fun to chirp each other on the ice and give each other the gears,” he said. “Tomorrow it’s on a whole other new level. It will be exciting.”
/
“I know he’s really excited playing against Josh,” Campese said. “But I think he’s really excited going head to head with Reinhart, knowing that he’s really the underdog and his team’s really the underdog in that game.”

Gregor: What do you do in your downtime, what are some of your hobbies, what do you like to do outside of hockey?
Draisaitl: Um, you know, I like to play a different sport. I like to play ping pong, I play soccer, volleyball, stuff like that and just hanging out with my friends from back home. I’m really a guy who likes to catch up with old friends and spend some time with the family. That’s what I’m doing.

"One of the things with Leon is he speaks great English, so you didn't have that language barrier heading over to North America."
/
"He's got a really unique blade. I mean, pay attention the next time you guys have an opportunity to watch him play. His stick blade almost looks like a mini-goalie blade, to be honest with you. It's really wide, it's thick. It's somewhat deceptive when the puck comes off that blade and I think he could take advantage of shooting the puck a lot more as well."
/
"He's just a really unique kid. He's very humble. He comes from a European background. His dad's been a pro player and a pro coach for many, many years. So he's got a really good hockey upbringing. He's very respectful. He's very humble. He treats people... he treats everybody the same. Our community has just really gravitated toward him."

Draisaitl was talented on the pitch in elementary school. He just didn't have the interest in soccer that his classmates and friends did. He was always lured to the ice.

In fact, 2 weeks ago, Draisaitl couldn't even name the other teams in Germany's grouping at the World Cup.
/
During the NHL lockout in 2012, when stars jetted to skate in Germany, Draisaitl was already in Saskatchewan playing for the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders. While living with the same host family that nurtured Mike Modano in 1989, Draisaitl missed out as Claude Giroux and Danny Briere helped bring German hockey alive in Berlin.

"I saw a couple games on the Internet," Draisaitl said. "The average attendance went way up - pretty much because we don't produce those kind of players. They are world-class players."
/
He was lured to hockey by his father, Peter, who is from the Czech Republic and played 25 years of professional hockey in Germany.

Leon Draisaitl was born in Cologne in 1995, while Peter played for the Cologne Sharks.

Peter Draisaitl was a three-time Olympian for Germany: 1988 in Calgary, 1992 in Albertville and 1994 in Lillehammer. With Canada and Germany knotted in an Olympic contest in Albertville, Eric Lindros scored in a shootout. It was Draisaitl who was tasked with keeping the German dream alive against Sean Burke.
/
For the last two seasons, Leon Draisaitl has been a continent away from his father, who is the head coach of Mountfield HK, a team in the top Czech Republic pro league.

"He is definitely the biggest influence on me," Leon Draisaitl said. "We talk pretty much every day. We use Skype or FaceTime. He watched pretty much every game this year on the Internet, using WHL Live. He's always there for me when I need him."

Some fans might have noticed that the Edmonton Oilers first round draft pick wasn’t wearing his new hat like the rest of the draftees. Leon Draisaitl put the jersey on but a certain member of the Oilers coaching staff didn’t allow him to take the hat. Head Coach Dallas Eakins played defence and blocked Draisaitl from putting on his new lid.

“He told me he is not going to give me the hat because he doesn’t want my mom to be mad at my hair,” Draisaitl said with a laugh.

Q. Is [your number] for your dad?
LEON DRAISAITL: No, actually not. I just like the number. My dad used to have a player on his team when he coached in German who was a player I loved watching. He was really good, and I just think it looks good.
/
Q. You've skated with Mark Messier a little bit, right?
LEON DRAISAITL: Yeah.

Q. How much more special does it make this knowing that he played with Edmonton?
LEON DRAISAITL: Yeah, like I said before, this is awesome wearing the same jersey as these guys like Gretzky and Messier and all the stars they've had. Like, like you said, he used to skate with my dad a little bit in the summer, and this is amazing to wear the same jersey he does.
/
Q. What was No.29 on your father's team?
LEON DRAISAITL: Ben Thompson.

As an interesting aside, Leon’s father Peter was a teammate of Mark Messier’s brother Paul with Mannheim in the German Bundesliga, as it was then called.

As usual, Draisaitl was quick to mention Carol Ring, his billet for the last two seasons and someone he has grown very close to. They were finally able to speak to on Saturday morning.

“She’s really proud,” he said. “She’s been a very big part of this as well.”

He has also texted back and forth with his roommate, forward Shane Danyluk, along with other members of the team.

Did you manage to see Leon Draisaitl? Do you think he can be compared to any NHL player?
Yakupov: Yes, Leon and I practice together since August. He’s a good guy, very professional. He remembers me of Pavel Datsyuk! Skating, hockey IQ, even the way he wears his jersey remember me about Datsyuk! The only difference is that Leon is much bigger. I can tell you a funny thing about him: he eats very fast, and it always seems that he doesn’t eat for a long time.

http://thehockeywriters.com/nail-yakupov-interview-with-edmonton-oilers-forward/ (September 14th, 2014)

“I enjoy playing with him, he’s a great listener and we work a lot together after practices and we talk a bunch,” Perron said prior to the contest. “If that’s the way it’s going to go this year, I’m pretty happy.”
/
“He seems older than he is, he’s really mature,” Perron said. “The fact that he speaks English very well is helping him out. I wish I spoke English that well when I first came up. But he understands the game, he understands what coaches want from him and goes out and does it. He doesn’t even think twice. It’s been awesome to get to know him so far.”

http://www.edmontonsun.com/2014/10/01/oilers-forwards-leon-draisaitl-david-perron-getting-plenty-of-opportunities-to-gel (October 01, 2014)

Draisaitl conceded “maybe it was a little bit” better they told him Monday night instead of Tuesday morning in terms of getting a good sleep.

“I wouldn’t say at any point I was confident or that I knew I was going to stick around, because you never know what’s going to happen. I was really happy that I could get that information that I could stick around.”
/
“For now I’m going to move in with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins,” the No. 2 centre said of the No. 1 centre.

“He’s going to take me under his wing, I guess. I’m really thankful for that. He’s a great guy and someone I look up to. He’s a great centreman and it’s fun being around him.”

Draisaitl has been living in the home of former Oilers ownership group member Bruce Saville since he arrived in Edmonton mid-summer to prepare for the season.
/
“I know I seem like a pretty calm guy, but once in a while I get really excited. I’m living my dream right now.”

http://www.edmontonsun.com/2014/10/28/oilers-centre-leon-draisaitl-stays-with-oilers-moving-in-with-rnh (October 28, 2014)

He doesn’t have a driver’s licence.

“Just lazy, I guess. I do have a learner’s (permit),” he said.
/
It is a well-known fact that hockey players in these parts haven’t always come up with particularly solid nickname: Smytty, Hallsie and Nuge are just a few examples of that. But Draisaitl’s handle really does need some work.

“Leon. Leo. We’re working on it,” said Matt Hendricks. “You don’t want to put too much pressure on the kid too early.”
/
He has a weakness for Fruit Loops and chips, according to his new roommate, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

“I’m not sure if I even know five things about him yet. He literally just moved in two days ago,” said Nugent-Hopkins, who pointed out that the rookie doesn’t cook.

Well, Draisaitl may want to whip up one of his specialties, and he has only two, according to his billet mom in Prince Albert, Sask. Prior to the NHL entry draft, Carol Ring said Draisaitl was a fantastic nacho maker and that he could also make a mean french toast.

“I keep telling him he has to learn to do these things, even though he thinks he’s going to have a chef,” she said.
/
He would rather play Ping-Pong than Call of Duty.

“That’s true,” he said. “I’m a video guy, but just not Call of Duty. I’ll play NHL, FIFA.”

Morrissey and Draisaitl are close friends, have kept in contact throughout this season and developed incredible chemistry in Prince Albert the previous two years as both became first-round NHL draft picks — Morrissey going 13th overall to the Winnipeg Jets in 2013 and Draisaitl third overall to Edmonton in 2014.

http://thehockeywriters.com/oilers-draisaitl-landing-with-whls-rockets/ (December 31st, 2014)

The Oilers decided to keep Draisaitl in the NHL for the first half of the season, but prevented him from joining Germany at the world junior championship only to send him back to junior a week later.

“That wasn't really my decision to be honest,” said Draisaitl of the decision to forgo a third and final world junior championship. “It was the Oilers’ decision and I don't want to comment too much on it.”

Without their star player, the Germans were relegated from the top division and will have to try to work their way back in 2016. It was especially tough for Draisaitl, who has been vocal about wanting to be an ambassador for German hockey.

“It’s never fun to see your country go down – especially your age group,” said Draisaitl. “It’s kind of funny; all my best friends are on that team and I’ve played with all of those guys for a number of years growing up in hockey. It’s not easy to see something like that, so obviously it’s disappointing. I would have loved to help them out a little bit at least.”

“Going to an organization that’s winning right now and that’s hopefully going to have a deep run is really exciting for me,” said Draisaitl.
/
“I was happier with Leon’s performance than Leon was. I could tell that he was frustrated and at times he was emotionally disengaged from the game because he’s a guy that is used to being the go-to guy on every team that he’s played. He’s used to scoring. And I could tell at that point that he was taking this more harshly than he should have been,” said MacTavish.

“When I did talk to him (about the reassignment), he, to me, seemed almost relieved and at that point I knew that given the situation that we’re in … it’s important for these players to play within their own peer group.”

Draisaitl may be just 19, but the Edmonton Oilers' prospect and newest member of the Kelowna Rockets has already achieved a level of stardom in Germany rivalling that of a national soccer star.

In a country where global hockey heroes are few and far between, he's even been dubbed 'The German Gretzky.'
/
"My dad played for over 25 years, it's something that's always been in the family, even my grandpa played hockey, so I've always been around it," said Draisaitl. "It's something I always wanted to do from a young age and follow them."

http://www.kelownacapnews.com/sports/287964581.html (Jan 8, 2015)

On Saturday night, when the Medicine Hat Tigers visit Prospera Place, Draisaitl will be re-united with Canada's world junior all-star defenceman Josh Morrissey, who the Rockets acquired in mid-December.

The two played together for two seasons in Prince Albert.

"It's really exciting," Draisaitl said of Morrissey's anticipated arrival. "I played with him the last few years, he's still one of my best friends and it's great that I'm back together with him."

http://www.kelownacapnews.com/sports/287883291.html (Jan 7, 2015)

Josh Morrissey, Gage Quinney, Leon Draisaitl and Chance Braid of the Kelowna Rockets, who all suited up for the Prince Albert Raiders last season, have been big contributors during the team’s Western Hockey League playoff run.

And while none of them won a playoff game in their time in Prince Albert, they’re enjoying post-season life in Kelowna.

"After the games when we win we definitely look at each other and you can tell that we’re all pretty happy just winning games," Braid said. "It’s a pretty cool feeling to just be around this. It’s been going good and that’s awesome."

The four players arrived in Kelowna in three separate deals over 28 days, coming from three different cities.

Quinney and Morrissey were acquired on Dec. 10, just as the latter headed off to play for Canada at the world junior championships.

Draisaitl, the third overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft, was playing with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers but the team’s desire to send him back to the WHL was a badly kept secret. With Oilers brass pressuring Raiders GM Bruno Campese to deal him to Kelowna, a deal was reached on Jan. 6. The final trade came a day later when the Rockets acquired Draisaitl’s former linemate Braid from Prince George, where he had been sent by the Raiders on June 2, 2014 because of a seven-player logjam for their three overage spots.

"I actually didn’t get to Kelowna for a whole month and in that time Leon and Chance were both traded but I think it just makes it easier for us to have some friends in the room," said Morrissey, who the Winnipeg Jets selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL draft. "I knew a few other guys prior from Hockey Canada stuff and whatnot but it was nice not to be the only guy going through being the new guy on the team."

OMG, Nonny, this is delightful. I low-key ship him and Darnell Nurse and have been thinking of writing for the pairing sometime this upcoming season and this is definitely going in my bookmarks as a reference for that. So much good info!
