Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
What really bugs me is when someone takes the ESL ticks of one character and gives them to a completely different character, sometimes one that doesn't even speak the same first language. Like that one fic that had Flower talking like Geno. >:(

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
Oh my god, I was just thinking 'I hope there isn't anyone who thinks a French-Canadian learns to speak English the same way a Russian learns to speak English' but I guess I shouldn't be surprised. What fic was this?

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
Flower actually speaks like I write a generic French-Canadian so.

da

As someone who has never written him, my only understanding is that he should say "fuck face" every three words.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
I think I reserve that for Giroux.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
Is "fuck face" a generic French Canadian thing? If so, I am quite amused. And here I thought Giroux was supposed to talk about pigeons and then bite people.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
It is a generic French Canadian swear, to my small sample of knowledge. Giroux does do those things, but I reserve the extent of "every three words" to him for cussing. He's just angrier than Flower

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
I don't really recall Fleury saying 'fuck face' to anyone but I just remember him saying 'Max is a douche' and how he sometimes says 'shit' in interviews and apologises for it right after he remembers who he's talking to haha

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
I'm a certified Pens hater, but that is really cute.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
I'm a certified Pens hater, and some anons' adoration and hype of him has made me go from neutral outside of general mockery to active annoyance, so ymmv.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

I'm curious, anon, how does one become a certified hater of something?

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
After enough rage washes through your system a badge magically appears in your mailbox.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
You take a test, and if you pass you get a certificate in the mail. You have to re-take it every five years or your certification expires, though.

Please don't ask questions about this. The last time someone did we got 10 pages of people commenting about why the pens are the worst team ever.

I mean, we *could*, but I'm more entertained by envisioning a craft project to make myself a hater badge.

It's a pretty grueling process, to be honest. The standards are fairly tough. Garden variety grumbling that the refs always favor the Pens isn't going to get you there.

Actually I was the initial certified hater. Whoops.

Eh. I'm pretty much neutral. I don't mind that nonnies like him. A lot of people do. It's not like every conversation becomes about him eventually. (That would be Sid.)

(That would be Sid.)

You are not joking.

But as for Fleury, he's just really not appealing to me, and I'm one of the people who remain completely unmoved by tumblr, so when he pops up as part of a potential pairing with multiple nonnies chiming in with agreement I'm like "...why??!" (I do scroll, though.)

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
"fuckface" comes from 24/7, when they mic'd Flower up for the shootout practice at Heinz Field. He was calling all his teammates "you bitches!", chirping them, and he called Jordy "you fuckface!" and "oh this fuckface again" when Jordy had another shot and lost the shootout.

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

From: (Anonymous)
Yep, he swears a lot but in a cheerful way. I've seen him swear at, and apologise to, a microphone. There was also a time when he was talking to kids at a school and was clearly struggling for words that weren't foul to describe Sid scoring on him at practise. He resorted to violent motions with his stick.

He may not say "fuck face" constantly, but having him curse a lot isn't fanon.

I hadn't heard that school story before, but that is amazing. Flower <3

There's also that recent interview where he clearly wants to say that Letang is talking out of his ass, but he says "talking out of his hat" instead and then has to ask the interviewer if that is actually a saying. It's great.

I honestly think Fleury is one of the cutest, most likeable players in the whole NHL so I don't think anyone could blame you, nonnie :)

Re: Writing Questions + Tips - ESL characters

Maybe not that specifically, but he is definitely the Pen least able to keep his language clean on demand.
