Speaking of the Stars--THERE IS A GIANT RED LINE MADE OUT OF SMALL TEXAS SHAPES THROUGH THE LOGO ON CENTER ICE-- what's up with that? No one else has their logo weirdly marked like that, do they?

Re: Random Hockey Things

Lots of teams do it. The Flames have a little flaming C in their red line, the Canadiens have the Habs logo...I think there's more, too.

No, I mean, have the red line over the logo. Pics: https://twitter.com/DallasStars/status/637751517420744704

I quit like the red line made out of Texas, but why over the logo? Also, the blue lines should follow suit.

The red line has to go over the logo because it is a part of the field of play. The red line serves a purpose in the game and it must be visible at all times and in every part of it. The logo is just advertising.

You can't break up the bluelines because the entirety of the blue line is very important to the game (for judging offside, etc), which is often done by judging the white space present between the puck or a skate on the blueline. Having the blueline broken up could make that difficult. Same reason the goal line is solid red.

Fun fact: most teams use something to break up the red line (Texas shapes, stars, boxes, etc) because back in the days of black and white TVs, it was the only way to tell the red line from the blue line on television. That started the convention of breaking up the red line, and teams got more creative with it as time went on. Some teams don't do it anymore, but most have fun with the ability to break up the red line with some bit of graphic silliness.

Ugh, Texas isn't even centered between the two red lines and it cuts the logo off! I can't even look at that picture for too long.

Re: Random Hockey Things

I think Texas is centered, actually. Texas is pretty chopped off on the left side as a state, and I think I see El Paso touch the left red line and the edge of where ever that thing on the east coast touch the right red line.

Re: Random Hockey Things

From: (Anonymous)
To my eye, it looks like east Texas is clearly touching the right red line, whereas west Texas has a gap from the left red line, but it could just be the resolution of the image. It doesn't help that Texas is so asymmetrical itself.

No, that's pretty common too - the red line splits the logo for most teams. The only team I think doesn't do it is Montreal, because their logo is ~sacred~.

The Flyers, too.

Honestly I think Montreal and Philly look the nicest as a result -- but the logos with bilateral symmetry or something close to it look ok. It's the ones with no symmetry, or words that are interrupted, that just look kind of hideous with a line through them.

I don't get why this is a problem. It's fine from a design perspective, other teams do it too, and even if no one else did it, it would still be totally on point for Texas. What's the big deal?

It's a little jarring for me to have the logo cut off like that. Obviously it can't be that jarring if I didn't notice it until someone else brought it up, but it's still a little annoying.

Found a link! This site has pics of all the teams and what their red lines look like. http://frozennhl.blogspot.ca/

So clearly this is one of those things that my mind has glossed over until someone called attention to it. (thanks so much Dallas Twitter). I can't unsee this now. :/

Yeah, it's one of those things that you don't notice until you notice, and then you can't stop.

Cool find! Thanks!

I've never seen them so close up before. I had no idea the Kings one was crowns. I thought they were just kind of blobby circles.
