From: (Anonymous)Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)You could do something like this if they were on different teams and not dating, and the pregnancy happened, say, at the end of the season before a lock-out. Or they got pregnant at the All-Star game and played out the season, because their team didn't make the play-offs, which would bring them back by, say, December. Or various other things. And if they weren't dating, but had a one night stand, there's no reason for the player who knocked the other guy up to automatically assume the baby is his.
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)Or, for that matter, to even know they had a baby. NHL players on different teams do not actually keep track of each other's personal lives or LTIR status, not unless they're close friends. And if mpreg is normal in this universe, the dude being pregnant and mostly missing, say, the summer, wouldn't get any more note than the guy who gets surgery and will miss the beginning of the season.
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)I understand handwaving to make things work, obviously, but on thing that will make me backclick out of any pregnancy fic, fpreg or mpreg, is the notion that, while knowingly pregnant with a wanted baby, it's okay to put your body in danger as long as you're not showing/in the early months and totally disastrous thereafter. I guess I can't get past the fact that IRL it's actually the other way around: early pregnancies get lost all the damn time (probably more often than they don't, and for many more reasons than "not being careful") and with later pregnancies, while you're more likely to take precautions, you're also more likely to have a viable baby despite yourself.
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)(But now this is just making me think... who knows how many secret children of NHL players are out there right now??)

From: (Anonymous)Plus it's a ridiculously common romance novel trope, putting it kind of in the same class of fantasy as regencies.

From: (Anonymous)Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)I read the original idea just like that too. I'm not sure how the ayrt came up with the bad math and logic bit.
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)The anon complaining clearly has a beef with the trope they wanted to express so it's only tangentially related to the OP ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)Definitely this
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)Or they missed that it had to be an AU. Not the complaining nonny, but I was mentally plotting it out with an eye to writing it and it took me a couple of rereadings to realize that the hockey outreach program thing wasn't just an optional detail on a prompt that could be done many ways, but rather an integral part of what had to be an AU. To be fair, I was drunk, but the prompter explicitly calling it an AU would have helped.
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)Or rather, it's still an optional detail, but optional within the AU framework. You know what I mean. I hope. LOL hangovers :(
Re: The Story You Want
From: (Anonymous)The OP said she wanted the one who got knocked up to raise the child on their own and then for them to reunite later on, I don't know how you went from that to 'people too dumb to notice that the dude they slept with in nine months hasn't played in OH HEY NINE MONTHS and wait, where'd he get a kid, IT'S A MYSTERY!' which sounds like something completely different?
