Which is not true, anyway. The child could still move to the US as an 18-year old, apply for citizenship and then play for Team USA. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but citizenship only matters when you're *changing* who you play for in international competition. If you've never played for anyone, you could play for whatever country will let you, right?

Applying for citizenship in the USA is not nearly as simple and quick as you're making it sound.

Yes, exactly. You first have to become a permanent resident, and then live in the country for 3-5 years before you can apply for citizenship (3 years if you're married to an American citizen/5 years if you aren't). Both are long, drawn-out legal processes as well.

There are expedited processes for athletes, though -- Tanith Belbin was fast-tracked to U.S. citizenship to compete for the USA in ice dance at the Olympics, since her partner was American and she was Canadian.

If you look at Belbin's Wikipedia entry it states she began her naturalization process in 2000 and was sworn in as a citizen in 2005. There was a fast-tracking process to correct legal stuff that had delayed her citizenship.

(also, wow, she's gorgeous.)

~You mean I forgot that this Canadian-born child of Canadian parents in a universe where mpreg exists who for some reason desperately wants to play for Team USA against his father's wishes would surely not be desperate enough to wait 5 to 7 years to play in international competition or that the timeline could not be sped up in any way in this universe, even though the Olympics only happen every four years and if you're in Worlds, your team is playoff-finished? Huh. How silly.~

That's even assuming he needs citizenship, which as I said, I don't think he would need if he hasn't competed internationally before.
