I'm waiting for a former player to come out before any current ones do. The first currently-playing out player is probably going to go through a lot of shit, and I don't blame any of them for not coming out.

I don't think it will happen anytime soon. The NFL, NBA, and MLB all had retired players come out long before any active players did. Plus, I've read articles where (straight)former NFL/NBA players talked about how they had played with gay teammates before; I've never heard an NHL player make a comment like that. Even in those captain roundtable interviews, Crosby, Toews, and Lundqvist were pretty awkward when commenting on how they would handle having a gay teammate.
